UPDATE: Versace have only just confirmed the Versus x M.I.A. collaboration and already the pictures are here! Take a browse through the gallery above to see the gold-tastic creations covered in flashy prints, medallions and logos made famous by the Italian fashion house. It's Versace paradise.
According to M.I.A. and Donatella, the collection aims to subvert the knockoff industry and Lord knows we've seen a trillion dodgy Versace-esque pieces at our local market so it's a pretty cool approach to have the real deal. Some are questioning, however, whether the subverted knockoffs just look like, well, knockoffs. Either way, we have an inkling there'll be a virtual stampede when the collection goes on sale next Wednesday 16th October. Will you be buying?

07 October 2013: M.I.A x Versus Versace Is 'Fast, Noisy, Brazen'
It was almost a year ago that chatter began about a M.I.A for Versace collaboration (see below). All went quiet until last week when the rumours resurfaced with suggestions that the collection is ready to be unveiled. Cut to today and the Italian brand has confirmed there is indeed a capsule collection for Versus set to land in a matter of WEEKS!
According to WWD, M.I.A. has created 19 pieces 'inspired by a number of counterfeit Versace items found in London markets'. We can expect garments for both men and women featuring twists on the brand’s iconic designs - hello Medusa head and interlocking Greek key - as well as graphic, kaleidoscopic prints and gold medallions 'with street energy'. There'll be T-shirts, printed jeans, silk skirts, jersey dresses and jackets as well as military-esque outerwear.

Uber cool, no? 'I adore the energy of the street, so when M.I.A. proposed to expose the issue of counterfeit Versace pieces by creating a collaboration inspired by these items, I thought it was an incredible idea,' Donatella told WWD. 'The collection represents all that I love of the new Versus Versace: it’s fast, it’s noisy, it’s brazen and it blends the world of music with that of fashion. I can’t wait to see it worn'.
M.I.A sounds pretty chuffed too. 'The theme of counterfeits, of those that produce and sell them has always been part of the culture of M.I.A.,' said the English-Sri Lankan recording artist. 'When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle. Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.'
The M.I.A. x Versus Versace campaign was shot by Mexican photographer Jaime Martinez in East London markets and stars the Grammy Award winner herself as well as her friends. It's also set to be GIF-tastic in keeping with Versus' focus on the digital generation. The collection will be available online and in a number of selected stores from 16th October. That's NINE days, y'all! Visit www.versusversace.com for more details.
07 November 2012: Is M.I.A. Collaborating with Versace?
When an entire audience got a peek at M.I.A's desktop as it was inadvertently projected onto a ginormous screen, folders named 'Versace Prints,' 'Bootleg Versace,' and 'Versace Outlines' were revealed. How curious... And there could only be one explanation: the singer is collaborating with Donatella! Yup, despite those CONvincing tweets about Lana Del Rey, it's actually another super-stylish pop star who's been in cahoots with the mega brand.

It was during a lecture at the modern art museum P.S.1 that the very organised folders were revealed with the titles suggesting she's turned her hand to designing. THEN, during the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week, M.I.A confirmed that she is indeed working with Versace and that the collection will be out in a matter of weeks. Is the rapper the next creative to be snapped up by Donatella to design the Versus line following on from British designers J.W. Anderson and Christopher Kane?
If that's the case, we're in for a right treat — especially if her snazzy ensemble at the Versace couture show, inspired by the brand's 1992 collection, is anything to go by. Because let's not forget M.I.A studied at the esteemed Central Saint Martins College so already has designer credentials. What's more, she was the roommate of Luella Bartley, modelled for Marc by Marc Jacobs in 2008 and her mother works as a seamstress in London. You might also recall she released a limited-edition Okley Run line that was sold during New York Fashion Week in 2008, which featured Mexican and Afrika line jackets and leggings as well as Islamic-inspired prints and hoodies covered in water melons. Faboosh!

But whether modelling in a Versace campaign or taking a more creative role, we reckon M.I.A's personal style — eccentric combinations of bold prints and bright colours — would work brilliantly with Donatella's sassy-verging-on-garish creations. Don't you?
