Marios Schwab On His Studio Bake-Off And Dressing Bond Girls: Designer Insider Exclusive Q&A

16 November 2012 by

Naomie Harris and Gemma Arterton hit the red carpet in Marios Schwab's Resort 2013 designs

It has been a very good month for London-based designer Marios Schwab. The most recent addition to the Bond girl rota, Naomie Harris, chose to wear a series of his stunning dresses for her recent Skyfall premieres and photocalls. Her most head-turning frock – a risqué sheer black gown with a crystal sequinned underlay – is proving to be very popular with Bond girls new and old: Gemma Arterton also wore a lace version of this dramatic entrance-making maxi to a London party earlier this week. Add to that an existing fan club of Blake Lively, Amanda Seyfried and Kristen Stewart, plus a high street collaboration for Debenhams – called Marios Schwab/EDITION and it's where you can snap up a bit of Marios magic for the party season at a snip of the runway price – it’s a miracle we managed to track the man down for a petite Q&A! Read on...

Grazia Daily: Marios, what a couple of weeks! You’ve dressed the likes of Kate Moss, Blake Lively and Kristen Stewart, but do you have any other women you’d love to dress?
Marios Schwab: "Susie Bick, she so beautiful."

Grazia Daily: Your latest number one fan seems to be Naomie Harris. What is it about her that suits your dresses so much? And how does it feel to dress a Bond girl?
Marios Schwab: "I think she carried the dress very elegantly and gracefully, she is intriguing that is always a good thing."

Two killer dresses from Marios Schwab/EDITION at Debenhams

Grazia Daily: What was the biggest challenge in making your eveningwear style work for the high street collaboration with Debenhams?
Marios Schwab: "Designing for a new customer is always a great challenge, I think the limitations for someone that is so specific about detail and quality is very challenging but the collection has a dress for all occasions and price points which I am really happy about."

Grazia Daily: What do you think is the biggest mistake women make with their party dressing?
Marios Schwab: "Wearing the wrong party shoe is a killer, especially if you are not used to walking in a high heel."

Grazia Daily: Do you have a favourite piece of all time – any collection you’ve ever done?
Marios Schwab: "My favourite dress of all times is a little black dress with a bustle that reveals a layer of nude behind fine lace, it is from my autumn/winter 2007 collection."

Grazia Daily: What’s the proudest moment of your career so far?
Marios Schwab: "The recognition of winning the Swiss Textile Award straight after the British Fashion Award, staying true to myself throughout my career and collaborating and meeting a number of amazing people from many different backgrounds."

Grazia Daily: What’s been your biggest fashion mistake? Personal outfit-wise or with the brand!
Marios Schwab: "I think my biggest fashion mistakes were wearing something that didn't feel right whenever I tried it,  fashion should be a very personal expression of the first encounter of your personality and its evolution, not necessary following trends putting yourself in something that you aren't comfortable in."

Marios Schwab's Spring Summer 2013 fringe-tastic footwear has been made in collabortion with Ancient Greek Sandals

Grazia Daily: Coming from a fashion initiative background yourself, do you make a point of seeking out new talent? Who’s your one to watch?
Marios Schwab: "Ancient Greek Sandals and Kite are a few of the new brands that I like." (Ancient Greek Sandals have created Marios’ footwear for SS13 - see pics above)

Grazia Daily: What would people be most surprised to know about you? A hidden talent? Guilty pleasure, perhaps?
Marios Schwab: "Apart of being addicted to popcorn, I love our Christmas bake off at the studio with my team."

Grazia Daily: And finally, what’s next for the brand?
Marios Schwab: "Marios Schwab evening wear and red carpet dresses have had such success and continue to be highly requested by a growing number of VIPs as well as dedicated customers.  We will look to travel with the collection to new cities next year and continue to work on exciting new projects and collaborations as well as with new brand ambassadors."

Grazia Daily: We can't wait!
