What character would you cast American designer Marc Jacobs as in a movie? With his love for dressing up in funny party costumes (the camel toe was a real highlight) or his love for popular culture, surely he’d be a cheery fella, right? WRONG. For MJ’s acting debut he plays a madame.
As in, the kind of mama figure who cares for ladies of the night. Except the world is virtual and Marc runs a house for underage internet porn. He houses the kids and references himself more as a Fagin from Oliver kind of role. Hmm.
'In the end, I’m really not a bad character,’ says Jacobs of the flick Henry Alex Rubin-directed Disconnect, ‘I’m actually the one who is protecting them in a way. I’ve taken them off the streets, and they don’t get harmed.’
So will this be a new career path for the multi-tasking fashion pro in his 50th birthday year? ‘No! I never wanted to be an actor, but a friend of mine who was directing the film persuaded me to read for the part. But being freezing cold in Yonkers at 4am repeating lines over and over…. I would never do it again. I’m happy with what I do – everything else is just extra homework.’ According to Mr Jacobs, waiting for fashion shows, samples to arrive and models to turn up is one thing, but the kind of waiting you do around on a film set is quite another.
No doubt you’ll be intrigued to see what Kate Moss’s bezzie would be forced to wear for his role as ‘sleazy’ Harvey. Apparently the entire MJ team were in stitches (no pun intended) upon discovering the designer’s on screen wardrobe of, as he calls them, ‘disco shirts’, acid wash ‘Dad’ jeans, sloppy hoodies and silver crucifix jewellery. Quite far away from his chic overcoats, retro sneakers and lxuurious silky pajama ensembles.
