Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier brought a dollop of Brit cool to New York Fashion Week when they presented their debut collection for Marc By Marc Jacobs on Tuesday afternoon. We were treated to a whole new attitude for the label with an energy and youthful dynamism which immediately sets the all-new MBMJ girl apart. References ranged from Manga comics and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to dirt bike and BMX racing, resulting in a scintillating mash-up.
As part of our Fashion Week 360 mission, bringing you the action of fashion week from every angle, Grazia was given an all-access pass to the show. It was there that we met the model everyone's talking about, Natalie Westling, who credits her striking red hair for making her standout amongst the catwalking army. We also spotted Marc Jacobs himself popping in to give his blessing, accompanied by BFF Katie Grand who has long championed her Brit pals Luella and Katie.
So what was it like having Marc on the front row today? 'Terrifying!' Hillier told us during our exclusive interview after the show. 'As we watched him walk out, obviously people noticed him walking on the catwalk and that was when it felt real. I mean, I’ve been having an outer body experience the whole day anyway but when people saw him there it was like, "it's happening!"'.
Marc wasn't the only one lending support. Alexa Chung swept onto the front row wearing a metallic coat by the hip-and-youthful brand. 'I'm here because I'm excited to see what Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley have done with the brand,' the style star said. 'I was always such a huge fan of Luella so I'm thrilled she's designing again.'
And the show didn't disappoint. Katie and Luella took their bow to a standing ovation as Marc Jacobs leapt up from his seat to give them a congratulatory kiss. 'We’ve planted the seeds this season and now it's time to see where it goes,' Katie told us. And we can't wait to watch.
