Julie de Libran, Marc Jacobs’ former women’s creative director at Louis Vuitton, has been appointed artistic director of one of French fashion’s most famous houses, Sonia Rykiel.

Julie left Vuitton in March, following the arrival of Nicolas Ghesquiere, but it’s not surprising that she’s been snapped up in no time. She has quite a pedigree having worked at Prada for a decade before moving across to Vuitton and with Gianni Versace and Gianfranco Ferre at Dior before that.

“She [Sonia Rykiel] was as important for me as Saint Laurent in the Seventies,” Julie told Women’s Wear Daily, talking of the label’s flame haired eponymous founder. It’s true that the woman oft referred to as ‘queen of the knits’ is central to the rise of ready-to-wear in the French fashion capital not to mention a living legend in her own right.

Rykiel CEO Eric Langon said his newly installed artistic director has a “natural understanding of the Rykiel universe, spontaneity and team spirit will definitely bring our house to the next level.”

Julie’s first collection for Sonia Rykiel will be shown in Paris in September this year.
