More than $5 million was raised this weekend at Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills where Michael Jackson’s former wardrobe items went on sale. The lots were from the collection of designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush which until now, have not been seen since the legendary singer wore them on stage and in his videos.
And who cleaned up at the auction? None other than MJ’s biggest fan, Lady Gaga. On Monday, she revealed to the world (via Twitter, natch) that she had bought no less than 55! items in the auction. Woah. Gagaloo promised that she will make sure to keep the costumes and memorabilia 'archived and expertly cared for in the spirit and love of Michael Jackson, his bravery and fans worldwide.' We reckon with prices for one of those sparkling gloves racking up a whooping $100K, it would have been frighteningly easy for Gaga to have spent over a million dollars across her 50 purchases - but she hasn't yet tweeted confirmation of the total sum. Boo.
It comes as no surprise that of all the bidders at the auction, Lady G would be front of the queue. She got up close and personal with MJ's costumes when she starred in Phillip Treacy's London Fashion Week show. Who could forget the hat master's army of models sporting a selection of the jaw-dropping costumes along with Mr Treacy's fantastically fantastical designs.
One thing's for sure, the bonkers star is building up quite the philanthropic reputation when it comes to sartorial purchases. Remember when she splashed £85,250 on an Alexander McQueen dress from Daphne Guinness’ wardrobe earlier this year? The question is: might these costumes be part of her latest fash-formation? Will we see Gaga sporting the creations on stage herself? Keep your eyes peeled for those sparkly gloves, peeps.
