Lady Gaga for V Magazine by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin
Thought you'd seen Lady Gaga's new V Magazine cover shoot? Wrong! The photos of the pop princess in a bouncy blonde wig which circulated last month are just one of a set of four spreads to go with four different covers and four different interviews by artist Marina Abramovic. All of the images were captured by photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and according to V 'Gaga considers each cover an extension of herself, representing her at different stages of her life.'
We're not sure which stage the second set of pictures are meant to represent, but on the cover the singer is seen undoing her skinny jeans, and clutching at a naked breast underneath a red, sequinned, cropped jacket. Her dark wavy hair is wet and disheveled, but her make-up remains similarly minimal, except in the still where she is completely in the buff where she appears to be smeared in boot polish - from Lady Godiva to Lady Muck.
This is just the latest step in the New Yorker's blazing comeback following hip surgery and the cancelation of her Born This Way Ball Tour earlier this year. Below we've broken down her reinvention from minimal makeup to bizarre YouTube uploads...
1. 24-Carat Gold Wheelchair: March 2013
Gaga turned to Ken Borochov the designer for Mordeki to create her a bespoke 24 carat gold, calf skin vehicle in which to recover from surgery - amazing pictures of which were uploaded onto her friend Terry Richardson's blog.
2. The Bob Is Back: April 2013
The 27-year-old starlet chose LA’s legendary Château Marmont as the venue to showcase her brand new peroxide bob. Perhaps it was a welcome break for the singer, usually known for sporting zany wigs and dramatic ‘do’s.
3. A Close Shave: July 2013
In addition to the peroxide crop complete with shaved undercut, Lady Gaga has tried alternative ‘dos: a sharp blonde bob and straight auburn locks. She allowed photographer Terry Richardson to capture her on his blog.
4. Twitter Shutdown: July 2013
Gaga deleted her tweets backdated to February – the time of her hip operation. With the message: "This interface has been shutdown temporarily. Please check back for updates."
5. The Announcement: July 2013
The singer announced on her social networking site, littlemonsters.com that she will be launching an App called ARTPOP which she describes as, “a musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion, and technology with a new interactive worldwide community — “the auras”…- a reverse Warholian expedition.” The App will supposedly, “Explore Gaga’s existence as a cultural interface, allowing the user to share in the ‘adrenaline of fame’.” She also revealed that the fist single from her album, also titled ARTPOP will be released on 19th August, while the album itself will be available for pre-order on 1st September and will be released on 11th November.
6. Lady Godiva: July 2013
One of LG's four V Magazine shoots by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin emerges. It features the star butt naked in a blonde wig covering her modesty with her hands.
7. Applause: July 2013
Fans get a first glimpse at their idols latest single cover for 'Applause' - also shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. We likened the star's colourful makeup to that of Mr Grimaldi - the original clown.
8. Look, No Eyebrows: July 2013
Gaga shows the world her new minimal makeup look, including bleached eyebrows.
9. Miss Minimal: July 2013
The star unveiled a complete image overhaul at a gala benefit in New York. At first glance we thought that the she’d transformed into Lisbeth from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as after being videoed having her nose pierced last week, she walked the red carpet with newly dyed locks and a leather and sheer panelled dress. Despite the gothic look, even the revelation of a lacey bra beneath her frock wasn't enough to make the ensemble provocative, but the new minimal approach has certainly raised some eyebrows - perhaps not Gaga's but then again you wouldn't know after she had them bleached out.
LG's stylist Brandon Maxwell - who has taken over from Nicola Formichetti - revealed, “I think that this time it is about letting some of it go and the focus being on the music because now she’s comfortable being naked and being who she is. The world has seen everything." He also said of her new look: "It’s more toned down and pulled back and chic. It’s also that we’re making suits out of things that they would not normally be made out of, like plastic, but they’re super well-tailored and clean."
10. No Applause: August 2013
Gaga's reinvention culminated in a bizarre video in which she tells fans that she's irrelevant and not to buy her new single:
- If you don't like pop music, you should turn this off
- Lady Gaga is no longer relevant
- Ever since Born This Way, she's a flop
- DO NOT buy her new single 'Applause' on iTunes
- Give her no A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
- Don't dance to the song at all
- DO NOT buy ARTPOP on November 11
- She's over
Reverse psychology much!
And finally... August 2013
Another of the star's V Magazine shoots - this time she's naked again and covered in dirt.
