Last week, we were cooing over the frothy wedding dress Katniss Everdeen (aka: Jennifer Lawrence) wears in the new The Hunger Games: Catching Fire character portraits - but who designed it? we asked. Today, we have the answer. While our predictions ranged from Marchesa to Alexander McQueen (Effie wears an Autumn Winter 2012 creation in her portrait), it turns out little known Indonesian designer, Tex Saverio, is the man behind Katniss' glorious gown.
Katniss Everdeen's wedding dress by Tex Saverio
The designer presented a similar dress with a ruffled skirt and organza corset under a metal cage at his bridal show back in November 2010 during Indonesia’s Jakarta Fashion Week, but for the Hunger Games film, Saverio gave it the silver screen touch. Katniss' bridal dress is covered in Swarovski crystals with the metal cage extended to signify fire while the voluminous skirt is covered in Mockingjay-esque chiffon. 'This is very important for the twirling/spinning Katniss does onstage, per Caesar Flickerman’s request,' the film's costume designer, Trish Summerville, revealed.
Summerville spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about how she came across Saverio's work. 'I found his designs quite some time ago and saved his information for a perfectly fitting project, then came Catching Fire – perfect!' she said. 'We did several Skype calls with sketches to work together in designing the wedding dress. I had seen a dress he designed with a similar metal bodice, and I wanted to incorporate it into our wedding dress design.' And they got one hell of a result!
Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian are already Tex Saverio fans
Lady Gaga has already given the designer, described as the McQueen of Indonesia, her seal of sartorial approval. Gagaloo wore his high neck black sequin gown with laser cut details on the neck and hemline for a magazine shoot in April 2011 and chose his designs again for her Fame fragrance campaign. Meanwhile, Nicola Formichetti dressed Kim Kardashian in one of his gowns earlier this year. What more backing do you need?
Peeta gets suited and booted in Juunj and Rick Owens
Oh, and while we're talking Hunger Games style, we couldn't let this dashing fashion moment slip through the net. Check out how dapper Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, looks all trussed up for Made In Chelsea his Victory Tour portrait. While that creamy, dreamy suit comes courtesy of Korean designer Juunj, the look is topped off with boots created by super-cool US designer Rick Owens. And let the (fashion) games begin!
