Kate Upton has gone from Sports Illustrated’s Rookie of the Year in 2011 to cover star of Italian Vogue. Now we have another Kate Upton fashion milestone to report on, as she is blowing out a candle on the cover of Vanity Fair for its special 100-anniversary issue.
For her Annie Leibovitz cover Kate does a Marilyn (again) as she wears a champagne one piece which shows off her mega cleavage and lashings of ruby red lipstick. She looks like she's about to burst into a special rendition of Happy Birthday Mr President. Vanity Fair is celebrating its 100th birthday as Dress & Vanity Fair was founded in 1913. Although it wasn't running between 1933 and 1983 so is technically only 50. But 100 looks so much better on the cover, don't you think?
Inside the mag Kate poses on a moon, copying the original illustration on the cover of Dress & Vanity Fair from October 1, 1913. Upton opened up to contributing editor Jim Windolf about her high fashion rise as she said: “I’m not going to name names, but one agency told me, ‘You’re too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy.’ I was so offended! I’ve never been so offended! I was like, ‘You know that you’re in America, right?’ And it wasn’t ‘American models’—it was ‘American women are lazy,’ period! I feel like a lot of women would disagree with that. A lot!”

She might not have the typical 'edgy' industry credentials, but Upton's high-fashion rise has been extraordinary. Kate’s 34-25-35.5 vitals are larger than typical straight size models, so she has been praised for bringing a more realistic body shape into the fashion spotlight. Along with Italian Vogue cover and V spread, she’s also scored a CR (Carine Roitfeld’s magazine) cover, a Muse cover and last but not least a US Vogue cover. The former Guess model has also covered Cosmo, GQ and Esquire – combining both commercial and editorial title success. Talk about having the last laugh.
Not convinced Kate has been welcomed into high fashion circles? This year Ms Anna Wintour invited Kate Upton to join the US Vogue family. Shot by Mario Testino, Kate had all ruffled Monroe curls and mega brows on the cover of the June issue. 'American Dream Girl' the cover line reads alongside the caption 'How Kate Upton became the hottest supermodel on earth'. That's quite the accolade for a girl who was ditched by Victoria's Secret!
