Update: Prime Minister David Cameron has tweeted: 'I'm delighted by the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby.’
St James's Palace has just released a statement that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their first child. Rumours have been circulating for some time now that the royal couple would be announcing the news before Christmas and we're so excited to have those baby rumours confirmed! All that remains now is to start a sweepstake as to what baby Kate and Wills will be called.
The palace released the statement after Kate was admitted to a private hospital for treatment for a severe form of morning sickness known as hyperemesis gravidarum. It explained: "The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in central London with hyperemesis gravidarum. As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter."
Despite the drama surrounding the announcement in a statement on the couple's website, the royal pair said that they were 'delighted with the news'.
Prince William sparked baby fever last week when a fan of the couple handed him a baby romper suit on an official visit to Cambridge and he responded: “I’ll keep that.”
