Kanye West Has A 'Bad Education In Fashion' - But It Paid Off For His Second A.P.C Collection

January has been all about menswear – which is fine for us since we’re always keen to borrow from the boys – but we're pleased to hear Kanye West naming the girls as his (occasional) inspiration too. The rapper-slash-designer introduced his second collection for A.P.C. at the Men’s Collections in Paris this weekend and revealed he likes "going into women’s stores and picking clothes, I think that’s rock ‘n’ roll like Kurt [Cobain] and Lenny Kravitz". We're sure his baby mama Kim Kardashian likes it too.

Other characters of inspiration were notably higher brow, from Yves Saint Laurent to Marcel Proust and Samuel Beckett. “Beckett had swag,” the brand’s founder, Jean Touitou, noted. Indeed. What's more, Marc Jacobs’ style was key to Kanye's designs - before MJ was into yoga, that is. Touitou clarifies that it's all about “the look of a semiology teacher in Princeton, New Jersey”. How fabulous!

But perhaps most interestingly, West admitted he's had "a very bad education in fashion". Who knew the artist could be so modest, eh? He revealed that he learned everything from Style.com before taking his creations to the catwalks of fashion week - and we all know how well that went *ahem*

But Mr West has not been put off just yet. “I’ve done extremely big fashion shows before, which I will do again,” he said. “That was like getting in a Lamborghini and driving really, really fast […] Jean has been teaching me how to drive a little slower.” And perhaps the arrival of the adorable North is a contributing factor to Kanye's slowing down?

“There’s this box that people put you in when they say, ‘you can only paint, you can’t sculpt,’" he continued. "It’s really ridiculous, frustrating and maddening and if I ever looked mad — I was.” Yes, we noticed. So Kanye worked closely with Touitou on the range and combined his own style with the brand’s French minimal vibe.

“I’m really happy with this, I feel like I’m starting to be able to express myself,” he said. “As you might have heard in my interviews over the past year, people have been like, ‘No you can’t design, you don’t have any ideas’ … I think it’s a big step for Jean, who is a very respected designer with a minimal approach, to give me the opportunity”.
