Last night Jason Wu had another career defining moment when Michelle Obama wore a custom Jason Wu gown to an inaugural ball for the second time. But Mobama isn't the only Jason Wu devotee, as since the First Lady stepped out in one of his designs four years ago he has quickly built up an A-list fan base.
Born in Taipei, the US-based designer learnt how to sew by designing dresses for dolls and by age 16 had created his own dolly clothing line called 'Jason Wu Dolls.' He designed his dolls for Integrity Toys and he became the creative director within a year (yep, this is all before he had finished school). Wu then headed to New York's Parsons School of Design and interned at Narcisco Rodriguez.
Mobama made Jason Wu a household name after she was introduced to him by Vogue's André Leon Talley. She wore a JW creation to her husband President Barak Obama's first inauguration ball in 2009, as well as on the cover of US Vogue and even on a visit to meet the Queen.
Wu is truly the darling boy of Hollywood and the go-to designer for the likes of Emma Stone, Emily Blunt and Diane Kruger. Dakota Fanning arrived at the CFDA awards this year in a hot pink Wu peplum dress arm in arm with the designer himself as her date, while Michelle Williams wore a blue JW gown to pick up her Golden Globe Award for My Week with Marilyn. Jason Wu is also Karlie Kloss' designer of choice and the pair raised £36,920 together for AIDS charities by completing the AIDS Walk in New York last year.
