Jake Bugg strikes a pose [Saint Laurent]
Since bagging the job at Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane has made no secret of his top notch taste in music. The designer has filtered his passion into the black and white campaign shots which have appeared throughout the past year with Courtney Love, Daft Punk and - OMG! - Marilyn Manson popping up as muses. And now we have a new addition: Jake Bugg.
The musician posed for Slimane’s lens (remember, as a proficient photographer, the designer shoots these Saint Laurent subjects) and wears the rock star staple, a L01 motocycle jacket, accessorised with his beloved guitar. It was while Jake was recording his second album back in May 2012 that he visited SL HQ in Los Angeles, becoming the first Brit (as well as the youngest) to join the impressive line-up.
Part of an ongoing project which sees music industry stars styling pieces from the label's collections, the latest campaign continues both Slimane and the brand's tradition of merging the world's of fashion and rock 'n' roll. Yves Saint Laurent was responsible for dressing Mick and Bianca Jagger for their 1971 St Tropez wedding while Slimane created stagewear for numerous musicians during his time at Saint Laurent in the late '90s and at Dior in the early 2000s, including David Bowie, The Liberties and Franz Ferdinand. Artists Christopher Owens and Beck were both selected as faces of Saint Laurent campaigns upon Slimane's return to the label last year.
Courtney Love was photographed by the designer in her New York townhouse earlier this year. The singer chose to wear Slimane’s own polka dot scarf when she posed for him, as well as a classic Saint Laurent pinstripe suite, signature silk ruffle shirt, an evening dress from the Pre Fall 2013 collection and a men's black and white fur coat from the most recent Autumn/ Winter 2014 show. Meanwhile Marilyn Manson and Ariel Pink both opted to appear in the same L01 jacket, which has also been worn by Keith Richards and Tom Burke, the front man of indie-pop band Citizens who starred in Saint Laurent's Spring 2013 Menswear campaign.
Alongside rock portraiture, another aspect of Slimane's music project is the commission of original soundtracks for Saint Laurent shows. Artists who have participated so far include Daft Punk, TY Segall and The Oh Sees. So as Jake is welcomed into the rock star family, let's take a look at Saint Laurent's musician-turn-models in the gallery below...
