Oh hey girl! Is that Lena Dunham on the cover of US Vogue for the very first time? That’s right, the Girls star-writer-director IS Anna Wintour's new cover girl - and doesn't she look fab? We say: YES.
Rumours that Lena would be gracing the legendary fashion magazine started when she was spotted schmoozing with the editrix at a CFDA event in October last year. The Internet went wild about the idea that a star who doesn't conform to the size zero stereotype had captured Anna Wintour's attention. Cut to earlier this month and speculation picked up pace when Anna not only attended the Girls premiere, but styled the cast for the evening.
Apparently Wintour was keen to get Dunham on board and reach out her cool twenty-something fanbase who she would love to transform into Vogue readers and establish a new generation of subscribers. But considering Dunham has fared pretty well on her own so far with writing, acting and directing credits under her belt, as well as earning her stripes as a fashion star in her own right, we wondered whether the star needed - or wanted - the Vogue association.

Well, now all the chatter has been confirmed with a shoot by Annie Leibovitz landing this afternoon. The cover features a close-up shot of Dunham and is as quirky as we'd expect, complete with polka dot shirt and puzzled expression. There's none of that cover girl smizing here. As for the shoot, Lena brought along her co-star Adam Driver so she can perch on his shoulders or languish across him in bed. We're certainly not complaining!
On the fashion front, the 27-year-old is trussed up in everything from a Prada embellished silk strapless dress to an Alexander McQueen black-and-white high-collar feather dress. She also sports a Céline multicolor wrap coat and a Dolce & Gabbana black cotton cap-sleeved dress, but every piece is accessorised with dollops of that edgy attitude.
You'll want to read the full interview cover on Vogue.com, but one of the highlights includes Lena discussing the issue of sex on the TV show. 'There was a sense that I and many women I knew had been led astray by Hollywood and television depictions of sexuality,' she says. 'Seeing somebody who looks like you having sex on television is a less comfortable experience than seeing somebody who looks like nobody you’ve ever met.'
She also opens up about living with her boyfriend, Jack Antonoff. 'I had a whole romantic idea about singledom, and then, of course, that’s the moment when you meet someone that you really care about.' N'aww! There's also great anecdotes about Lena feeling like a Hollywood outsider and Erdem Moralioglu dishes on dressing her for the punk-theme Met Ball in a sheer frock.
But the best revelation from the whole thing is that this is not, in fact, Lena's first appearance in US Vogue. Oh no! In fact, she first graced the fash-tastic pages back in 1998 when she was just eleven years old alongside Jessa Jemima Kirke. Yep, looks like this cover has been in the works longer than we'd thought...
