House Of Grazia: How To Be In Fashion Now With Charlie Miller And Ruth Chapman

And the tips keep on coming here at House of Grazia! Our very own executive fashion and beauty director, Charlie Miller, has teamed up with Ruth Chapman, CEO of Matches Fashion - which has 15 boutiques and website and is a fantastic fashion brand in its own right - to fill us in on key trends for now. Take note, ladies...

1. MONOCHROME

Charlie says; 'When Marc Jacobs opens New York Fashion Week with his own show, using Edie Sedwick, factory girl - was his reference and closes Paris with Louis Vuitton, and both shows featured graphic black and white looks - you know it's going to be a key trend. Other designers to go for stark monochrome included Dolce & Gabbana, who did 'deckchair stripes' -  Peter Pilotto - and Balenciaga, who went for black and white ruffles. The A-list have already be seen out in Louis Vuitton checkerboard looks'

Ruth says; 'There has been a lot of colour recently so monochome feels fresh, and of course each designer interprets it in a different way; from Giles's laser cut ballgown to Christopher Kane's gaffer tape garments - to the simplest item - a white shirt. Another way to wear black and white is with shoes and bags which are also a brilliant way to style it. White shoes are also a huge trend this season.'

2. FUTURAMA

Charlie says; 'This look is personified by Christopher Kane's spring collection. With iridescent leather, pearliscent fabrics, plasticized fabrics and accessories, it's industrial, futuristic and other-worldly all at once. I love Stella's lucite heels and Christopher Kane's nut and bolt dress.'

Ruth says; 'If you're a real fashion hound, you can take this look to the extreme or, if you prefer, you can just work in an accessory. Even a Perspex cuff will update your look, or wear a metallic leather skirt with a grey sweater like Jonathan Saunders did.'

3. MASCULINE/FEMININE

Jacket £1,145 and trousers £495 from Alexander McQueen at Matches Fashion

Charlie says; 'Trouser suits have come back thanks to Raf Simons at Dior and Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent, who are menswear designers taking over and taking menswear staples and feminising them - with slouchy cuts, or styled with a sheer blouse or ruffles. Its not just dressing like guys do, it's masculinity plus fragility at the same time'

Ruth says;  'the trouser suit come in many different permutations, for example McQueen have created a more feminine suit than previously, and in particular, I'm feeling a kick flare this season'.

Charlie - 'I'm feeling it too!'

4. COUTURE REMIX

Charlie says, 'an emerging trend is this extreme level of workmanship and craft into intricate items like Giles's laser-cut ballgown, despite the recession, people are paying for these luxurious, almost couture-like, one-off pieces'

Ruth says; 'Buyers find it interesting duirng a recession too, but women are looking for a level of beauty in the clothes - something they can see the level of work in - or something you can keep as an heirloom and wear and re-wear that. It's a 'clothes charisma' factor that you will buy something becuase you adore it and it's not fast fashion - it's special and beautiful.

'Giambattista Valli Couture - beautiful gold thread woven into it. That amazing level of workmanship is something we increasingly see in ready to wear. People will buy one piece - but a piece they really really want to have a keep forever'.

5. SHEER

Preen sheer T-shirt £385 from Matches Fashion

Charlie - 'Sheer is not super feminine, in the way you might have expected. Rather than diaphanous sik and super floaty - its more sporty, angular and functional. Like Richard Nicoll - who did it in a really modern, sporty way. Or clean-cut veils of sheer - like at Theysken's Theory.

Ruth says; 'buyers are really excited about sheer - it enhances the quality of your skin - it's flattering with Erdem and Christpher Kane and hems with chiffon or organza around the bottom of the garment, which makes it feel super-modern. At Preen for example, they did sheer snakeskin print - how beautiful!'

Charlie - 'you can wear a nice black bra underneath - a smart one. And that'll look lovely - we're really ripping up the rulebook here!
