Hermès Scarves Get A Comme des Garçons Twist Thanks To Collaboration With Designer Rei Kawakubo

New collab alert: Rei Kawakubo has teamed up with Hermès! The Comme des Garçons designer is set to launch two limited-edition collections of mythical silk carré scarves for the French luxury brand. According to WWD, the line will be called Comme des Carrés (see what they've done there?) and will hit stores in February - just in time for *ahem* Valentine's Day.

Noir et Blanc, the first collection, will feature five scarves with abstract black-and-white designs. It will be sold exclusively in Comme des Garçons stores in Tokyo’s Aoyama neighborhood, New York and Paris. If you can't spare the air fare, luckily the second collection, dubbed Couleur, will be available in Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market store right here in London. It will include six colourful scarves that feature geometric elements like giant patchwork, Vichy checks and shirt stripes. Oh yes, the iconic Hermes scarf - worn by everyone from the Queen to Grace Kelly - is about to get a quirky Comme touch.

'I have always had an immense respect for Hermès’ tradition and artisanal know-how,' the Japanese designer and founder of Comme des Garçons, told WWD. 'During this joint project, rather than being guided by the idea of the scarf as it is worn, I became interested instead in the beautiful ‘artworks’ that the designs on Hermès carrés represent, and I sought to change them by adding elements. By combining them with abstract images, we have transformed the carré and created a unique object.'

And we can't wait to see the results, not least because this is one collaboration that is an ideal, as well as exciting, fit. Kawakubo's collections, which show at Paris Fashion Week, often feature materials draped across the body or knotted into an asymmetrical shape, just like an enormous luxury scarf. And as well as a signature monochrome palette, her designs have been infiltrated with colour and bold prints, perfect for bringing a modern kick to Hermès' classic style.
