The 2014 Cannes Film Festival Expained: Our Guide To This Year's Red Carpet Action

11 May 2014 by

This Wednesday, Hollywood royalty will be jetting into the Riviera, as the Cannes Film Festival returns. As always, expect to see the mother of all yacht-offs, Sharon Stone in bodycon and more Chanel than on Rue Cambon. That not enough for you? Mr Ryan Gosling will also be there. We have compiled a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know about this year's festival, so read on for the lowdown...

Grace of Monaco will open the festival on Wednesday...

The Cannes Film Festival always opens with a headline-grabber. Last year it was The Great Gatsby, and this time it's the much anticipated Grace of Monaco. There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the film which has been pushed back several times, partly due to Harvey Weinstein being so unhappy with the edit.

The Grimaldis, the royal family of Monaco, have also criticised the film calling it nonsense. Nicole Kidman who plays Grace said to The Daily Mail: ‘I know they’re upset. I would be, too, if it were my mother. It’s a child’s job to protect their parent. In that regard, I get it. I get why the children are upset. I can’t say much other than that I have great respect and regard for their mother. It’s not meant to be a biopic. I certainly did my best to honour everything that was real and truthful in it.' The question is, will it be as panned as Diana?

Premieres Wedneday 14 May

So get ready for Nicole Kidman dress envy...

As a seasoned festival-er, Nicole Kidman knows how to dress for Cannes. Last year she was a juror and wore floral Dior, frothy Valentino and white Giorgio Armani. We hope she channels Grace Kelly on the opening night in a ball gown to end all ball gowns. Just ask yourself Nic, what would Grace do?

Ryan Gosling's directorial debut...

One of the most anticipated films of the festival is Lost River, which is Ryan Gosling's directorial debut. The film stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith and Gosling's girlfriend Eva Mendes. It isn't up for the Palme d'Or, but the film is in the second most sought-after category; Un Certain Regard. Even if his film gets jeered by critics like last year, we're sure Ryan will get plenty of attention.

Premieres Tuesday 20 May

Robert Pattinson on La Croisette. Twice...

Robert Pattinson is starring in not one but two films showing at Cannes. By our calculations that means there will be at least four R Patz sightings - two photocalls and two premieres. He is the lead in Map To The Stars and also stars in The Rover.

Kristen Stewart will be there too, probably drenched in Chanel...

Twilight fans, we might just see a Robsten (that's Robert Pattinson + Kristen Stewart) reunion. Kristen Stewart is also in town next week promoting her film Clouds of Sils Maria which also stars Juliette Binoche and Chloe Grace Moretz. Expect to see Chanel's new face wearing a Karl creation. Any bets on how long until she's spotted in her Converses?

Premieres Friday 23 May

The second Saint Laurent film of the year...

The second Saint Laurent film of the year, directed by Bertrand Bonello, will show at Cannes. Gaspard Ulliel plays Yves Saint Laurent, while Lea Seydoux who took home the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year also stars.

Ryan Reynolds makes a comeback. Will Blake make the journey to Cannes?

Ryan Reynolds has several flops on his IMBD page, such as The Green Lantern, but we could be about to witness a comeback for the Hollywood heartthrob. Ryan is starring in The Captive which is in contention for the top prize at the festival, the Palme d’Or. Mr and Mrs Reynolds made their first red carpet appearance as a married couple at the Met Ball last week. Will they repeat the PDA over in Cannes?

Who will partake in the 11 day frock-a-thon?

There is bound to be Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Chanel and Christian Dior on the red carpet, but which stars will show up? A Listers expected to touch down in the Riviera include Sienna Miller, Hailee Steinfeld, Eva Mendes, Lea Seydoux, Hilary Swank, Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan and Kristen Stewart. Let the frock-off commence!

A daily Sofia Coppola sighting...

This year Sofia Coppola is one of the jurors at the festival, following in the footsteps of 2013 juror Nicole Kidman. Style wise, expect a Parisian colour palette (black, white, navy) and classic French labels such as Lanvin, Chanel and Louis Vuitton. She's also bound to have called in a dress or two from her BFF Mr Marc Jacobs.

Stars doing a Grace Kelly...

Grace Kelly at Cannes

As Grace of Monaco will be the talk of the town, we hope to see many stars doing a Grace wearing yacht-appropriate capris and full 50s skirts.

The Artist part two?

Director Michel Hazanavicius and actress Bérénice Bejo were the talk of Cannes back in 2011 when they debuted their film The Artist, which went onto win Best Picture at the Oscars. The husband-wife duo return to Cannes with The Search, which unlike The Artist is in colour with sound. Hazanavicius also wrote and produced the film, which is a remake of Fred Zinnemann's Oscar-winning war film from 1948 of the same name.
