In case you haven't noticed, it's Geek Week on YouTube this week and to celebrate our fashion team - Fashion News and Features Editor Katherine Ormerod, Fashion Editor Hannah Almassi and Fashion Assistant Josh Newis-Smith - have teamed up with Fashtag to bring you their take on the nerdy chic look. While once the fodder of teen film bullies, geeks are having quite the moment and it seems the fashion world is on board.
Forget flesh flashing and body-con, the likes of Alexa Chung and Zooey Deschanel are the perfect geek role models as they prove that you can be super sexy without stripping off. Dorky signatures include the tartan middy skirt, which has got librarian written all over it, the classic penny loafer from Russell & Bromley, a Peter Pan collar frock and a cable-knit jumper - thrown over the skirt for the ultimate in granny chic.
But for those of you who don't want to channel Thora Birch in Ghost World, there's also a polished take on the geek trend - watch the video above for the full Grazia guide to geekery. Nerd alert!
1. The Hipster Geek
This geek is best personified by Zooey Deschanel, not only in her character Jess Day in New Girl, but also on the red carpet. The star once said herself that she didn't feel comfortable as a Hollywood blonde and we can't imagine her without her brunette bangs and specs. Katherine says, 'She's librarian-meets-Brooklyn hipster and while some are annoyed by her 'kooky girl' attitude, she's an authentic geek through and through.'
2. The Stealth Geek
Jenna Lyons of J.Crew is fierce with geek attitude. Hannah says, 'She's got the glasses and the boyish tailoring, but there's always a pair of killer heels and perfectly mismatched colour palette. There's nothing awkward or gawky about her. It's not young and girly and studenty at all. Her looks is very considered as well, which is what is making JCrew as a brand stand out too. Who knows, maybe at the weekend she relaxes with a pair of loafers!'
3. The Girly Geek
Of course we couldn't talk about geeks without mentioning Alexa Chung. The presenter is a little bit like Zooey in that she loves a full skirt, a cable knit, a playsuit and a pussybow blouse. Josh says, 'Her outfits are always very feminine, but with a nerdy twist. She takes it down a nana root too with flat pointy shoes and clip on earrings, but because she's so angelic looking she pulls it off.' We have to thank Alexa for championing the penny loafer too.
