First he covered Lady Gaga in meat. Now he’s taken over Paris’ most glamorous department store. Looks like there’s nothing that will stand in the way of the amazing artistic wunderkind that is Nicola Formichetti. Grazia Daily met the fashion superstar in the French capital to discuss his new role as Diesel’s Artistic Director over macaroons and champagne (it was tres chic).

After a successful stint at Mugler, Mr Formichetti has embraced the opportunity to reach a wider audience at the helm of the Italian brand. And his first mission? To cover the Galleries Lafayette with crowd sourced Tumblr art as part of Diesel’s Reboot campaign. The ‘Show Me Your Art’ project sets the entire interweb a mission of showing Nicola the weirdest, wackiest and very best of digital art to put on display around the Parisian store. One artist has even transformed Mona Lisa into a selfie-taking pouter. Genius! Here, Nicola fills us in on everything from digital innovations to his dream of dressing Miley Cyrus and being away from his adorable Pomeranian dogs. C’est la vie, eh?
Grazia Daily: Congratulations on your appointment at Diesel! How's it been so far?
Nicola Formichetti: I didn’t realise [the job] was so big! What I say travels a long way. It’s exciting but I have to be careful too.
Grazia Daily: The Reboot project is an amazing opportunity for young artists...
Nicola Formichetti: If I was one of the artists I’d be like, f**k yeah! That’s what everyone wants on Tumblr, more followers. They don’t want Christmas presents anymore - they want more followers!

Grazia Daily: You said you're not working so closely with Lady Gaga - what do you think of her latest transformation?
Nicola Formichetti: Brandon (Maxwell), my old assistant, is doing an amazing job. He’s evolved from what I was doing - I had a couple of years with her and it was like a rollercoaster. But she’s transformed now and good luck to her, she’s amazing. She’s one of a kind.
Grazia Daily: Who else would you like to collaborate with?
Nicola Formichetti: I love Miley Cyrus, I think she’s so cool, she’s so like, "I don’t give a f**k". I think she’s a beautiful girl doing her thing and good on her. I’d love to work with her.
Grazia Daily: And you also styled Kim Kardashian - how was that?
Nicola Formichetti: I think she’s a really beautiful girl, a girl with a figure, you know? She’s the most famous woman in America and I love the fact that she’s from TV and people don’t always think that she’s cool but I have no problem with things like that.
Grazia Daily: Would you say you're drawn to girls with big personalities?
Nicola Formichetti: Maybe I’m just targeting difficult ladies. All the freaks! I just love working with freaks and individuals.
Grazia Daily: Do you still enjoy styling stars as well as designing?
Nicola Formichetti: I don’t think I’m a good wardrobe stylist. I just love collaborations. That’s why I can’t work with actresses because actresses don’t want to take risks. They want to be normal and I love doing something different. Gaga was different because every day was a theatre and changing all the time. I just love girls with attitude.

Grazia Daily: We love following you on Instagram – do you have any rules around social media?
Nicola Formichetti: Oh God, yeah. I used to say f**k all the rules, it should be real and you shouldn’t think about it too much. Because people can smell that, you know? But then some of my friends started posting boring pictures all at once and I just unfollowed them!
Grazia Daily: And how are your adorable Pomeranians?
Nicola Formichetti: Tank and Bambi – they’re in New York and I miss them so much. I have a whole team of nannies who look after them while I’m away!
