What is it about the BAFTA Awards and rain? Hollywood royalty arrived at the Royal Opera House this evening with the task of navigating down the slushy, foamy red carpet in skyscrapers and couture. No easy task, but boy did they do it with aplomb.
So let's get down to business and talk dresses. Marion Cotillard went for a bright yellow Dior gown (bien sur) fresh from the Spring 2013 couture runway. As the face of the brand, her designer choice comes as no surprise but the classic strapless cut was given a bold and daring twist not just because of the electric colour but thanks to the peplum-like layer that showed off a sheer mesh at the knee. Is this Marion's way of proving that Jennifer Lawrence's dress did not rip?
Jessica Chastain embraces the rain
In the black corner, we have Anne Hathaway in Burberry, Amy Adams in lacy Elie Saab and Samantha Barks in Celia Kritharioti - but several stars brightened up proceedings with colour-popping shades. The drop-dead gorgeous Jessica Chastain backed British in a bright blue gown by Roland Mouret, Laura Bailey looked lovely in poppy red Roksanda Ilincic and Andrea Riseborough made like Marion in a canary yellow number from Vivienne Westwood.
Jennifer Lawrence opted for a strapless gown by Dior, naturallement, which got rather drenched. Oops. But the shocker of the night was a toss up between Helen Mirren's brand new pink hair-do and Sarah Jessica Parker breaking the style rules by wearing an Elie Saab jumpsuit rather than a traditional floor-sweeper.
