What's the best way of bagging a lifetime supply of couture clothing? Become an internationally successful recording artist and name check one of the world's top fashion designers in your music, of course! On her latest album, ARTPOP, Lady Gaga pays homage to her friend Donatella Versace in a track simply titled 'Donatella'. The playful pop song acts as an ode to the platinum blonde Italian and her ability to "walk the walk, no matter what."
Last year Lady Gaga attended a private dinner held in her honour by Donatella at the Palazzo Versace on Via Gesù in Milan. The two women made one hell of a glamorous pairing and clearly made an impression on each other.
When news of Gaga's 'love letter' 'Donatella' broke, Versace quickly returned the favour and emailed celebrity gossip site Just Jared to explain how much Gaga's friendship means to her. She said: "Dear Jared, How incredible to see the news of Lady Gaga‘s 'Donatella' song on Just Jared... I would like to thank Gaga for her geniality, creativity, incredible talent and super bitchiness. I am honored to be her friend and of course I love the song! Love, DV.”
The singer had previously told Just Jared: “‘Donatella‘ is my love letter to Donatella [Versace]. The song is an incredible crazy fun pop song with really raising electronic beats that I did with [producer] Zedd. It’s about being a fearless female and not caring what people say about you – being proud of who you are and walking the walk no matter what.”
While 'Donatella' may reference one of the biggest names in fashion, Gaga denies any similarity to Jay-Z's track 'Tom Ford' from his recent album 'Magna Carta Holy Grail'. She said: “No, it’s not so much about Donatella as a brand as it is Donatella the person, about me as a person, that idea of what the public wants from you.”
