Update: Ahead of DKNY's launch party in London next Tuesday, the brand's iconic logo has been projected across the UK capital including Piccadilly, Old Street Big Ben! As if we weren't excited enough about the unveiling of the 10 new DKNY logos with the New York skyline reimagined by 10 different artists, as well as the bash hosted by London model Cara Delevingne with a performance by Rita Ora, this projection has literally brought new light to the city.
4th June 2013: The DKNY mural in New York, which features the iconic skyline framed in the Donna Karan logo, is as New York as yellow cabs and Starbucks. The unofficial entrance to Soho from 1992 to 2008, was pulled down five years ago but this summer it is back. This time in colour.
As DKNY have launched the #DKNYARTWORKS project in which the original logo is reimagined by 10 international artists and will be showcased in 10 cities around the world. Each artist has given their own interpretation of the skyline, painting the city how they see it. Cool huh?
DKNY in 2013 is all about Cara Delevingne (like everything else in planet fashion) - surely you've seen her strutting in a yellow tank in front of New York cabs by now? So of course the label got their number one girl involved in the project, as Cara D will host the launch party in London on the 12th June. Plus her wifey Rita will also perform at the bash, along with Iggy Azalea. The theme for Cara's night out is the 90s - which makes sense as that was the decade that the original went up. We'll get our ripped denim and scrunchies ready Car.
So back to the art... the skyline logos will be shown in New York, Paris, Milan, Dubai, Kuwait City, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul and Tokya and will be oh so bold. In London the graffiti artist Roids has created a 10 by 13 foot 3D logo sculpture which will be rotated in key London landmarks But the fun part is there wil be a social scavenger hunt, as before the 3D mural moves clues will be posted on Facebook. In Paris there will be 500 kiosks in and around the city, in New York the art will hit Times Square and in Kuwait DKNY will takeover the IMAX tower.
The project is also taking over the world wide web via the microsite dknyartworks.com. Here there will be behind-the-artwork films and information about each artist. But also via the DKNY augmented reality app, every single tweet and instagram will be pulled onto the site.
Donna Karan said of the project: 'We loved collaborating with individual artists that reflected their city while being inspired by ours. It’s like a worldwide street art fair — connecting the dots of art, style and community.' Now in case you were thinking you'd like a DKNY art-tastic tee, they are selling limited-edition products to tie in with the art such as tote bags, scarves, t-shirts and even flip flops.
