Karl Lagerfeld and Chloe's sketches
As soon as Kate Middleton announced that she was expecting the fashion world exploded with predictions about how the Duchess's signature style would change once her royal bump began to show. Would she go for baggy, ruffled (rather tent-like) creations like Princess Diana? Or would her bump be so neat that she wouldn't even need to head to the maternity section?
So far we haven't exactly seen a style shift from Kate Middleton, but the royal bump has inspired fashion heavyweights from Karl Lagerfeld to Donna Karan to sketch what they would like to see the Duchess wear exclusively for WWD. Karl Lagerfeld puts Kate Middleton in a navy blue frock with sleeves, a slight mullet hem, a neck collar detail and then a plunging neckline. Mr Chanel said of his sketch 'I think this dress is very much in her taste.'
Chloe puts the Duchess in a peach ruffled shift, Nanette Lepore in a colourful printed organza frock and Alexis Mabille in a rather sexy little red dress. But Andrew Gn wins the award for the most realistic sketch of her infamous blowdry. Oh and he also gives her her very own Duchess it-bag.
Donna Karan's midnight blue floor-sweeper doesn't exactly scream maternity, but the New York designer explained that 'this is a dress she could wear forever, at any age, at any stage, during and after her pregnancy.' Speaking of blue frocks, Huishan Zhang sketched a divine blue, loose floral frock for Kate and said to WWD 'this evening look is in fine velvet textured with Dutch satin... the bottom and the back are embroidered with eyelet in a Chinese flower shape.'
Amanda Wakely, who has dressed K Mids before, said she would put her in 'a softly draped cocktail dress from our spring collection, but in an exclusive made-to-order mallard green, a shade that I think would be amazing on her colouring... It is youthful yet demure with a beautiful embellished shoulder.'
