Comptoir Des Cotonniers’ New Creative Director On How To Do Parisienne Easy-Chic

With Isabel Marant’s high street collaboration on the horizon and an infiltration of Parisienne stores continuing to chic up the UK high street, it’s safe to say that Brit style has never looked so French. Adding further Gallic charm to the English fashion landscape is Comptoir Des Cotonniers’ new creative director: Amelie Giller.

Her Parisienne industry pedigree could rival any: as the co-founder of Zadig and Voltaire, she can easily kick tough leathers and denim in action, but a stint at Kenzo as Studio Director under the label’s prior designer, Antonio Marras, will no doubt have revealed a softer, feminine side.  GraziaDaily caught up with Amelie as her first Comptoir collection drops into stores and online for autumn…

GraziaDaily: Can you tell us a bit about the revolution of Comptoir for A/W'13?

Amelie Gillier: This is not quite a revolution, it is really just a new chapter, but one that I am very excited to participate in. I want to bring back what made Comptoir Des Cotonniers so iconic, and such a pioneer, in the affordable luxury market. It was very interesting to look through the archives and understand the brand's DNA - I wanted to stay true to this by bringing a more modern feel, whilst still maintaining an urban twist and feminine edge.

GraziaDaily: What’s the signature you bring to the brand?

Amelie Gillier: More than just clothes; I wanted to create an attitude, an easy-chic recognisable style, and a strong, assertive silhouette - toying with necklines, well-shaped shoulders and stylishly emphasized legs.

I like to play with volume. I do this by challenging the traditional masculine/feminine code: wearing an oversized coat with skinny jeans, or a dress that is just so typically Comptoir. Emphasizing finer details in clothes is a fashion statement in itself, and can give the silhouette a strong allure, such as in the mix of fabrics in a jacket. We pride ourselves on combining trend-led fashion with a good mix of materials, cuts and details highlighting that real French know-how.

GraziaDaily: Do you have a favourite piece, and if so, why?

Amelie Gillier: The silk printed blouses are perfect for every occasion; worn with a pair of jeans during the day, or with leather legging for a night out. The print “écorce” is so gorgeous and a big personal favourite.

The coats are also really strong this season and are iconic, trendy pieces in the collection - with clever detailing, contrasting materials, arranged asymmetries, quilted pieces and shaped collars.

The biker boots and the leather biker jacket have that dark femininity, providing the perfect edge this Autumn Winter. All in all, I feel this is a really strong collection to pick from as there are so many prints, colours and materials at play - delivering chic fashions to keep you warm all winter long!

GraziaDaily: Who and what inspires you?

Amelie Gillier: I am inspired by my travels, but also by models that have a sense of style. They personally interpret the fashion trends, and mix and match high fashion pieces with more affordable ones. It is a smart way to play with fashion and to transform yourself - like Coco Rochas or Cara Delevigne are able to do. They have the right look at the right moment.

GraziaDaily: Do you think French style has changed in any way recently?

Amelie Gillier: Yes, it evolves constantly, whilst still managing to remain timeless. It takes the best of the trends, and blends it with that recognisable French culture and heritage. We are lucky to have that ability and, in my opinion, it is what makes the Comptoir des Cotonniers brand so unique and iconic.
