'Thank God That’s Not Me On The Catwalk!' Claudia Schiffer On Being A Super In The '90s

30 January 2014 by

Claudia Schiffer is the latest star to get the Net-A-Porter treatment, as she werks it in seductive lace on the next cover of THE EDIT. The 43-year-old wears sheer lace Alessandra Rich, burgundy floral Marc Jacobs and an Oscar de la Renta full skirt. She also wears that Stella McCartney lace dress Cara Delevingne wore on the SS14 catwalk. But it's not all about the LLDs (little lace dresses), as the blonde super also gets suited in an Alexander McQueen tuxedo. She is still on top form after two decades in the industry - we reckon she's got the most bouncy hair in the biz. Here's what we learnt from Claudia's interview...

1. Being shy stopped her from going off the rails...

Claudia thinks she avoided pressures that sent most models off the rails in the 90s because she was shy. 'I didn’t like the taste of alcohol or cigarettes, and believe me, I tried them!' she says. 'But in the first 10 years of modelling, I was so shy that no one offered me anything and I was oblivious to it. That probably saved me.'

2. She's thankful she no longer walks the catwalk...

'I haven’t been to a fashion show in ages,' she says. 'But when I have sat there, watching the models walk, I honestly think, ‘Thank God that’s not me’.'

3. On working with her husband...

Claudia says about working with her husband, British director and producer Matthew Vaughn: 'I’ve helped on all his films before, but over the years I’ve got more and more involved and my husband is more involved in my projects, so we’ve moved everything closer together.'

4. On moving to the country...

Thirteen years ago Claudia moved to rural Suffolk with their children: Caspar, 11, Clementine, nine, and Cosima, three. 'Matthew and I decided that it wasn’t a healthy environment in which to raise children. Now they are in a country school and it is completely private. It's bliss.'

5. On being shy...

'When I started modelling I wouldn’t say a word,” she tells Net-A-Porter. 'I literally wouldn’t open my mouth. If someone talked to me I would go bright red, and I spent the whole time praying that I wasn’t the next person in the pictures, as I hated being the centre of attention.'

6. On the skeletons in her closet...

'I look back to the 90s and I have a lot of the clothes I used to wear then and I think 'Jesus what was I thinking?!' It looks so over the top, but that was the fashion back then and I remember thinking this is really, really cool.'
