If, like me, you have a boyfriend with a smaller waist and better ankles than you, the following story will make some sense. Sort of.
Liu Xianping, a 72-year-old Chinese grandfather is modelling for his granddaughter’s fashion e-commerce site.
As readers of Grazia will be wholly aware, this is not unusual because if we’ve learned anything from 2012 it’s that now is a golden period for geriatric models. Daphne Self, Iris Apfel, grey-haired Jackie, they’re all at it, fronting campaigns despite being well into their latter decades.
Except the difference here is that Liu is modelling women’s clothes. And not just women’s clothes. women’s clothes, sometimes with wigs, always with tinted sunglasses tights and <always? with an expression in the grip of hilarity.
Ms. Lv launched her fashion store with 5 other graduates in May. The modelling aspect only started when the two were unpacking her clothes and Liu picked up one of the pieces before launching into a dialogue about how to mix and match an outfit. Ms Lv got out her camera, the pair started shooting and now, well, here we are watching an elderly meme all over the internet in knee high socks.
Talking to the Chinese press, Liu defended his actions: ‘Why unacceptable (for someone like me to wear women’s clothes ? Modelling for the store is helping my granddaughter and I have nothing to lose. We were very happy on the day of the shooting. I’m very old and all that I care about is to be happy’.
Quite frankly, with news that its sales have increased fivefold since he appeared online we’re on the same page, Liu. Also: nice pins, babe.
