Before Miley's twerking, there was Lady Gaga rocking up to the MTV VMAs in 2010 wearing slabs of meat. You may remember it? The singer scooped an award presented to her by fellow outrageous costume lover, Cher. As well as the meat dress, Gaga had a piece of steak worn jauntily atop her pink and blue hair and a, err, meat purse which she duly asked Cher to hold as she gave her acceptance speech. So how did the legendary diva feel about being Gagaloo's meat purse holder?
'I thought it was hysterical,' the 67-year-old told Heat magazine. 'I didn't realise what it was at first and then she said, 'Hold my meat purse', and I thought it was a new designer I didn't know. Then I looked down and thought, 'Woah this is strange'. It felt very weird, but the design was gorgeous and it was really a work of art.' What a good sport!
Of course, Cher's no stranger to outrageous outfits herself: we've seen her style evolve from a perfectly 60s look of long dark glossy hair and thick black eyeliner to Vegas-style Cleopatra ensembles and Indian goddesses to snow queens. As for Gaga, she's gone from meat dresses to Versace-tastic homages and art-inspired displays, forever famed for an element of performance that feeds through every aspect of her style (even when simply super glam in Saint Laurent, her look always has a flourish of the Haus of Gaga handwriting). For her latest incarnation, we can't wait to see her debut film role in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills in which she dons some seriously devilish costumes.
