Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, ex-catwalk superstar and wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, is making her return to modelling as the star of Bulgari's haute joaillerie campaign. The Italian beauty joins the ranks of Julianne Moore, Rachel Weisz and Isabella Rossellini who have all been ambassadors for the luxury jewellery brand. France's former first lady was photographed in Rome this week by legendary photographer Terry Richardson, who has worked for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Yves Saint Laurent, arousing suspicions that he is behind the campaign, which will break in the second half of this year. As yet Bulgari have not released a statement on the report.
Bruni-Sarkozy kicked off her modelling career in the late 1980s and early 90s working for major designers and top fashion houses including Christian Dior, Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel and Versace. She scaled the dizzying heights of the fashion industry, becoming among the 20 highest-paid catwalkers and dating rock stars Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger long before Kate Moss was dubbed the ultimate model groupie.
Although she left the runway in 1997 to pursue a career in the music industry, fashion caught up her when she married President Sarkozy in 2008 and received First Lady style scrutiny from the world's media.
This new appointment at Bulgari will mark Carla's official return to the fashion world, but she's also set to release her latest album, Little French Songs, next month.
