The Best Vintage Moments At Cannes Film Festival

09 May 2014 by

The Cannes Film Festival starts next Wednesday, which is the perfect excuse to delve into the archives. Cannes has been attracting the starriest of crowds since the festival du film first started in 1946. Naturellement, with the starry crowds come the most stylish wardrobes, and this major movie event has not only placed itself as one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies on the cinematic calendar, but it’s become a romantic, sun-drenched haven of dramatic red carpet moments and chic speedboat ensembles. Forget Coachella – this is where proper summer style begins! Heck, even the airport arrivals are a fashion opportunity.

Since the ‘50s it’s been a full-on glamour-fest and today’s red carpet-eers continue to keep the impeccable standards of Sophia Loren, Liz Taylor and Grace Kelly alive. Hollywood’s leading ladies have always put extra thought into their wardrobes for this occasion. Nowadays you may find a tad more glitz, a little extra leg and a truckload of additional sequins, but the unadulterated loveliness of what will arrive at Cannes this year will no doubt WOW us.

We’ve trawled the paparazzi archives to uncover some classic Cannes moments you may have never seen before: from Joan Collins lounging on a yacht to a Princess Diana moment, scroll through the gallery above for our favourite vintage fashion moments.
