With a stellar line-up of international heavyweights including Raf Simons (Dior), Miuccia Prada and Marc Jacobs up for this year’s International Designer of the Year Award, the competition has been fierce to say the least, but we’ve just heard that…… it’s Mrs Prada who has emerged victorious! The award was handed over to Miuccia by none other than Gwyneth Paltrow.
While both the other contenders have had a hugely successful year – special mention must go to Marc Jacobs’ final collection for Louis Vuitton – Mrs Prada presented four bang-on shows at both her Prada and Miu Miu lines and has presided over a booming company with revenues up 7% (£1.17bn) year on year for the six months to July 31.
Always a major event, Mrs Prada’s A/W 2013 and S/S 2014 collections for Prada were particularly influential. If you loved this season’s ginghams, cold-shoulder styles and tread soled shoes, you’ve got Mrs Prada to thank. Come next year when you are swathing yourself in fine art inspired frocks and shodding yourself in orthopaedic flats she’ll also be to blame.
A former member of the communist party with a pHd in political science and a background in women’s rights, Mrs Prada is a directional, fearless and political designer. She famously doesn’t discuss her inspirations or conceptual process and rarely gives any interviews. She’s also incredibly passionate about contemporary art and opened her art space Fondazione Prada in 2002. As far as role models go, you couldn’t find a more successful, aesthetically dexterous and cerebral woman on planet fashion. So all together now, three cheers for Mrs Prada!
