It’s safe to say that Brad Pitt’s Chanel No.5 ad will go down as one of the most spoofed commercials of all time. But while the fashion world has been sniggering at Mr Pitt’s ‘Ineviatble' moment, it seems that Brad and Monsieur Lagerfeld have been having the last laugh.
Speaking to Selina Jones, House of Fraser’s Director of Beauty Buying, Grazia Daily has learnt that rather than bombing with customers, Brad’s ad has proven majorly popular with shoppers. Ms Jones tells us, “Since the Brad Pitt advert for Chanel No.5 premiered we have seen an increase in the number of men coming in to buy classic Chanel fragrances, both for themselves with Bleu de Chanel and the iconic Chanel No. 5 for the ladies in their life.”
Rather than alienating Christmas shoppers Ms Jones suggests that, “the advert has changed perceptions amongst men of the brand as a whole.” While no exact data is available for sales, we are told the brand is performing extremely well during the festive season and shoppers are refering to the 'Brad Perfume'. Quite the turn-around.
In this digital age the old adage that there’s no such thing as bad press rings truer than ever. So as Brad 4 Chanel memes have been popping up all over the internet, the product message has spread organically as people share the spoofs, which in turn send the tills ringing. Will this inspire a new trend for risible commercial concepts? And will Nicole, Jennifer and Angelina et al soon be fronting equally spoof-able ads? Whatever next!?
