Beyonce has been named a 'Titan' by Time magazine. The singer is on the cover of the title's '100 Most Influential People' issue for 2014.

The annual edition celebrates the artists, leaders, pioneers, titans and icons who are changing the world, with each of the 100 influencers picked celebrated for a famous fan. Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg sings Beyonce's praises in a write-up for the mag.

'Beyoncé has insisted that girls “run the world” and declared, “I’m not bossy, I’m the boss",' she writes. 'She raises her voice both on- and offstage to urge women to be independent and lead.'

Bey appears on one of the covers for the special edition of the mag. In the snap her hair is long and straight and she's wearing a bra-top and high-waisted knickers under a sheer shirt. The picture is facing backlash from critics who question why the singer's wearing only underwear for a shoot celebrating her cultural influence.

In a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot Bey explains why winning the title means so much to her.

'It's not about fashion or beauty or music it's about the influence I've had on culture,' she says, describing her mother and Blue Ivy as the key influences on her. 'Becoming a mother and looking my daughter in her eyes made me into a woman. It made me very very strong.'

Bey joins the likes of Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama and The Pope in the round-up of the key players in world culture. Miley Cyrus, Pharrell and Amy Adams have also gained places.

Justin Timberlake gushing about Pharrell, Dolly Parton singing Miley's praises and Lupita Nyong’o giving Steve McQueen a shout out. Here our 10 favourite quotes..

1. Stella McCartney on Phoebe Philo, Céline’s creative director

'One of the few female designers, she celebrates the simple and champions the quality and reality of a woman’s wardrobe. When people invest in her work, they have it for life. One of the things we share is the reality that the clothes we design are actually worn.'

2. Dolly Parton on Miley Cyrus

'If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing.'

3. Sheryl Sandberg on Beyonce

'Beyoncé doesn’t just sit at the table. She builds a better one.'

4. Justin Timberlake on Pharrell Williams

'He made me fearless, and I’ve carried that with me the rest of my life.'

5. Colin Firth on Benedict Cumberbatch

'It’s rare to the point of outlandish to find so many variables in one actor, including features which ought to be incompatible: vulnerability, a sense of danger, a clear intellect, honesty, courage — and a rather alarming energy...He must be stopped.'

6. Emily Blunt on Amy Adams

'One night I was driving us home from a Mexican restaurant. I had just told her I was a great driver. Then, as we were leaving, I put the car in drive — rather than reverse — and drove us into a tree. It was a tap, not a cataclysmic crash. But to Amy, stuff like that is heaven.'

7. Malala Yousafzai on Hillary Clinton

'A world with more women leaders will be a better world, and Hillary Clinton is helping make that possible.'

8. Lupita Nyong’o on Steve McQueen

'He’s the guy on the court who elevates the rest of the team… There are stars that suck up all the energy in the room—Matthew maximizes the energy and shares it.'
