Cate Blanchett Poses Backstage With Her Leading Actress Award (Getty)

Last night the great and the good of the film industry gathered for the BAFTA awards, hosted at the Royal Opera House. There were winners and losers not just on the podium but also on the red carpet and here we rate the looks which have got everyone talking here at Grazia HQ…

1. Angelina Jolie in Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane

Ange, perhaps the most unexpected guest of the evening, certainly made sure her presence didn’t go amiss! Some are saying this is Saint Laurent ensemble is contrived but to hell with them as by donning this look all of a sudden everyone else looked a little less fash forward, as if they were driving down the mode motorway at 30mph whilst she hurtled passed in the fastest of automobiles with a one way ticket to Sassyville. This season is all about co-ordinating your accessories exactly with your ensemble, so naturally when your arm candy is Brad Pitt it would be rude not to opt for full blown matchy-matchy. Two words: best dressed.

2. Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen

Glorious, golden, BAFTA winning Cate can rarely put a fashion foot wrong and high five gurl for opting for a British designer! In a move straight from the style text book, Cate placed long black dress with silver floral detailing alongside a Roger Vivier metallic clutch. All very nice but I can’t help but think, where did risky Cate go all of a sudden? After some statement Balenciaga during her Blue Jasmine campaign and silver Prada at the Oscar nominees’ luncheon I was hoping for something a little off kilter. However, totally enjoying the fact she opted for a medallion esque piece of statement jewellery, which sent a pre ceremony message out: “Even if I don’t win ladies, I will always beat you when it comes to fashion. So there!” We are your fashion people Cate and you are our ruler!

3. Lily Allen in Vivienne Westwood

Ah, the eternal wall flower Lily Allen… where shall we begin? It was part Geisha with the hair piece and part Dickens costume drama via that bustle. Whilst many have slated this look I am going to praise Lily for actually going out there and making a statement. After all, any dress which gets more coverage than those worn by the actual movie stars deserves some admiration. It’s like a metaphorical fashion Miley Cyrus twerk in the garment groin of the winners and losers. Girls just wanna have fun after all!

4. Lupita Nyong'o in Christian Dior

First thought: Dior-dropping! Lupita lost out in both of the categories she was nominated in and given her less than impressed loosing face when an absent Jennifer Lawrence claimed the Supporting Actress prize it wasn’t the best night for the actress. However if you are going to lose out, make sure you have copious amounts of green Dior silk to sob into. The look is a throwback to J-Law’s red 2013 Golden Globes dress but that colour against her skin tone is just beyond sublime. Lupita you are no Jennifer but in her absence we will take you as a consolation prize. #sorrynotsorry

5. Amy Adams in Victoria Beckham

We all thought it was a dead cert that Amy Adams would turn up wearing Antonio Berardi. But we couldn’t have been more wrong as the red haired vixen wore not just one but two VB dresses. For the awards themselves, Amy donned a LBD with all the VB trademarks: some perfect panels and a little collar. With the hair scrapped back and just the odd jewels here and there Amy oozed Hollywood perfection with a side dish of vamp. Amy is a firm believer in why wear one dress when you can wear two, so slipped from glamazon to glambabe in a cut-out blue dress. Two Amy Adams looks for the price of one, always enjoyable.
