On Sunday night Lady Gaga walked the VMA red carpet in a satin Prabal Gurung gown with a tulle train. No steak hotpants? No gender-bending alter ego? The most controversial thing about the look is the nose ring and push up bra. But by the time Gaga took to her seat, (five outfit changes later) she was in a string shell bikini with her bum out for all to see.
Gaga's performance of Applause was a lesson in how to do a quick change. It all started with her head trapped in a white box. The camera then panned to reveal Gaga in a nun-like costume accessorised with a string of pearls and the hat/box. Forget steaks, Gaga is now championing the sugar cube look. Then the stripping began, as Gaga changed into her Poker Face platinum wig and royal blue sequin suit. Next up is the Art Pop era, as she changed into a black sequin bodysuit with a highlighter yellow wig and primary colour face paint. THEN Gaga stripped down to an itsy bitsy shell bikini and curly wig - it's quite an achievement when your you get more coverage from your 'do than your clothes.

Let's take a few minutes to analyse this look, shall we? The mermaid top looks like it was made on a serious budget, as she wore two white shells stuck on top of a nude bra. We could make this at home after a quick trip to Hobbycraft. Her, erm, lady garden was covered with nothing but a few patches of flowers. Shame the garden didn't stretch a bit further, as her buttocks were covered with nothing but a G string.
So how do these looks compare to Gaga's vintage VMA moments? We have compiled all of her 'omg-did-you-see-what-she-was-wearing' looks. The first mention HAS TO go to that raw beef number which came complete with matching meat boots, fascinator and bag. Oh how the world erupted. Then in 2011 she arrived as a man. Yeah, a man. Gaga spent the whole evening in character as Jo Calderone, wearing a dirty white shirt with black pants and slicked back hair. Let's not forget her condom-inspired number... or the egg debacle.
