When the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of the Lindo Wing of St Margaret's hospital yesterday for the first time since giving birth to her son on Monday not only was she providing the world a first glimpse of the royal baby, but also paying homage to the child's paternal grandmother, Princess Diana. Kate's bespoke cornflower blue crêpe de chine dress by British designer Jenny Packham gave a respectful nod to the frock of a similar hue and print which Diana wore when she left the very same hospital 31 years earlier with her first child William, now the Duke of Cambridge. Although Kate's dress was more fitted and less fussy, there's no denying her sartorial gesture.
This is the latest in the DoC’s efforts to keep her late mother-in-law's memory alive, another of which is the fact that the royal couple chose the same medical facility as Diana did for both of her pregnancies. And while Diana was adored by the British public and lauded for her style, Kate looks set to follow a similar path, as her outfit choices spur retail sales. This isn't the first time she's opted for polka dots either, as she wore a white and black Topshop spotty dress to Warner Bros. Studios in April of this year, while back in the '80s the dotty print was a firm favourite with Princess Di.

Prince William gets less attention for his attire, but it's worth noting the new dad's ensemble yesterday was far less formal than his own father's was in 1982. Times have changed and so have public perceptions of the royals and Kate and William have been a huge factor in this shift from maintaining appearances and traditional values to behaving like a normal modern family. When Prince Charles held his baby up for the world to see for the first time he was dressed in a suit and tie with his hair slicked to one side. William meanwhile rolled up his shirtsleeves, undid his top button and made delightful quips about lack of sleep and thinning hair. How refreshing!
