Fishtail Fatigue? Anna Wintour Is Over Strapless Gowns On The Red Carpet Too

18 June 2014 by

These days the red carpet can be a little bit meh, with a sea of identikit nude strapless dresses. Many A Listers take refuge in beige fishtail-kick gowns, in the hope they'll avoid being slammed on worst dressed lists. Unless your name is Rihanna - blending in is the new standing out.

A beige floor-sweeper might stop you from being fined by the fashion police, but it won't win you any style points from Anna Wintour. We wondered what was going through Anna's head when she was stood next to a nearly-naked Rihanna at the CFDA Awards earlier this month.  But it looks like she finds a visible thong less offensive than a mermaid gown.

Wintour spoke to students at Central Saint Martins this week and went on a red carpet rant. She said:

"The red carpet, in the United States, has become too much of a business. It's a fact that celebrities are paid to wear everything, and to me that sometimes comes across as very manufactured and not individual. I was just recently at the Tony awards in New York, and, God, they need your help. Let me tell you, it was a disaster. So, there are opportunities, but don't expect the Oscars the first time out.

They have all these teams of people telling them what to do, what to wear, how to do their hair, make-up. And they're so scared of being criticized, whereas, you know, what's wrong with looking different? How many mermaid fishtail strapless sequins [gowns] can we see?"

Anna isn't the only industry giant with fishtail fatigue. Tom Ford said earlier this year:  'What's worn on the red carpet has nothing to do with what's going on in contemporary fashion. It's a bubble of 1950s Barbie clothes. It's quite different to what real people are really wearing.' Ouch.

But not all stars wear nude mermaid gowns - some prefer rocking up in the nude. Literally. Yesterday we introduced you to the red carpet nearly-naked gang - women like Rihanna - who take their underwear off before facing the flashbulbs. In recent years a red carpet risk usually equals a thigh high slit - or in Kendall Jenner's case two.
