House of Grazia: Henry Holland On Making It In Fashion And Raving Nanas!

Henry and Angela in the House of Grazia salon

Wonderful London designer Henry Holland came down to to the House of Grazia to speak to his followers in person. He start off by talking about his AW13 collection - which he showed only two days ago.

'Rave nana is inspired by the young girls who live in East London but dress like nanas with blue rinses, you know, they're sort of in these old lady clothes but they're in their twenties and they go out clubbing on the weekend. Each collection we do is inspired by fabrics as well - like SS13 which had the tie dye leather - so this collection's fabrics are all about the nana element with carpets and wallpaper prints, and the rave element with the parkas.'

On getting his work into magazines; ' It's good to get into the trend reports, if a lot of other designers have done a similar thing to you - although that's post show - I don't plan it. How can you really?'

On his design process; 'I am really indicisive - like when we scrapped weeks of work on cammouflage because I decided I prefered Seventies wallpaper prints. So that wasn't good news for my team, who'd been working really hard for weeks on cammo - but then we just junked it. Sorry!'

On backstage dramas over the years; 'Once we forgot a jacket TWICE and had to go back in a taxi to get it. Not once but twice. The lights had gone down and my PR had to run across the catwalk holding it. We were really pleased to get the carpark space to do our AW13 show, although perhaps, the odour of the place wasn't the most conducive to a glamorous high fashion show-environment (!)'

On another occasion, [hairdresser] Adam Reed had to sew a jacket for us, because I hadn't really thought in terms of Autumn Winter, and had made all T shirt dresses. Although that was years ago, and these days I do plan in more outerwear for winter.'

Kelly Osborne, Pixie Geldof and Alexa Chung at Henry's show last season

On his loyal celebrity following; 'Pixie, Grimmy, Sophie Ellis Bextor, no Lorraine [Kelly] came to the show this year.  I'm not stupid. I know that having celebrity friends has helped me although they are my real friends, and I've never ever paid a celeb to come to my show. The thing is, readers of fashion mags and serious fashion followers are much lesser in number than say Heat readers, so it does help me reach a much wider audience. We've all grown up together and we all support each other's projects.

On his plans for the (immediate) future; 'I've got something of a crazy shedule - I'm off to Madrid for the weekend then Paris for sales then Dublin then Tokyo for sales and press. Then I've got a wedding up North then I'm going to Sydey, Korea, Hong Kong, and in Australia I'm launching a range with Sportsgirl - which is like the Australian TOPSHOP.'

'I'm not going to be in [TV reality show about diving] Splash - although I really wanted to be. I love Tom Daly. But it was not to be. My agent wouldn't let me as I am too busy and that show is awful. But I'd love to do it in principle'.

You can buy four pieces from my AW13 collection online now on eBay - it's fixed price and there's two tops, some tights and a dress. Which is FAB.
