When the Duchess of Cambridge visited Willow Primary School in Manchester yesterday wearing a £1,065 Erdem dress we weren't expecting her to get her hands dirty. But pregnant Kate was so keen to be of service that she grabbed a spade and shoveled earth over a freshly planted Willow tree in front of comedian John Bishop who looked like he was trying out his material to get the expectant mum to laugh. We bet she was hoping she'd worn her trusty L.K.Bennett wedges rather than the spindly-heeled navy pumps, which sank into the flowerbed as she and her bump got to work - although at least it wasn't raining, as it could have been a whole lot muddier.
This isn't the first time that Kate has ditched the perfect princess image and got mucky, as she joined a group of scouts on a camping trip in the Lake District last month. When we think of the royal family attending official engagements, it's always of perfectly coordinated outfits, stiff handshakes with dignitaries and a lot of standing around, but Kate defies convention by engaging in everyday behaviour - just like us!
Alongside cooking, gardening and travelling on public transport, she's also tried out recreational activities like table tennis, shooting hoops, climbing trees and indulging in a favourite British pastime - drinking tea.
Take a look through the gallery above to see Kate doing TOTALLY normal things.
