#ArtBasel Miami: Why It's A Celebrity Hotspot And What You Need To Know About The Art Fair

06 December 2013 by

An #artbasel trend has been rolling through our instagram feeds for the last few days with Kimye, Pharrell and of course Derek Blasberg, the fashion BFF who is invited to EVERYTHING all in attendance and snapping away.

Yes it's sort of sickening to watch the glitterati frolicking against sunsets and palm trees in the U.S.A.'s art hotspot, tweeting pictures of Jeff Kooons' giant shiny easter eggs and kitsch cartoons by (Louis Vuitton favourite collaborative artist) Takahashi Murakami BUT dancing Lenny Kravitz photos aside, for many, this is work. Miami Art Basel is serious stuff.

After a major boom in art sales three weeks ago in New York (over a billion dollars spent in Sothebies and Christies on Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud and more Jeff Koons pieces) 250 of the world's leading gallerists are poised, ready to sell works from some of the globe's most famous contemporary artists. Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin are, of course, in attendance but our guide below will reveal why it's such a draw for musical artists and fashion muses too.

1. The Fashion Parties

All the best brands get involved with Basel in Miami, from Louis Vuitton's dinner at the old school elegant Raleigh hotel (attended by Pharrell and his new wife Helen Lasichanh) to Haute Time and watchmaker Roger Dubuis's party at the W round the corner, the face of which, charming Gerard Butler (who sadly hadn't a chance to 'sample either ass or art' GENUINE QUOTE) attended). Meanwhile Parisian concept store Collette erected a mini Drive-Thru in honour of its collaboration with Miami boutique Alchemist, with cute assistants kitted out in rollerskates.

2. Celebrity Artists

In sunny celeb-hub Miami, celebrity artists are a MUST at Art Basel, but you'll also find celebrities wanting to rub shoulders with serious artists too, shunning the limelight like Michelle Williams who was 'just happy to see some art'. The artists may or may not help get you taken more seriously, but it would definitely be worth chatting to, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst et al.

3. Glamorous Location

So maybe not EVERYONE is in Miami for the art. Pharrell was in it for 'the weather, the water' - fair enough. But what about the fabulous 50s architecture, pastel painted hotel fronts and multi-story carpark stores (Alchemist). Oh and the beach.

4. Proving Your Art Credentials

Partial to some artistic statements themselves, Kim and Kanye were unsurprisingly in attendance. After their sort-of creepy Bound 2 video, made by Show Studio fashion photographer Nick Knight the couple are obviously keen to up their art ante.

5. Err - The Weather!
Well, as Pharrell said in rule No.3... but let's enjoy Derek's sunset - as if we should need to be convinced?
