The New Style Rules You Need To Know Before Heading To Ascot This Year

One of the most iconic summer highlights of the British sporting and social calendar is almost upon us and soon Royal Ascot will once again open its gates for five days of world class racing.

As much as we love to see the horses let’s not lie; we’re more interested in the high fashion from the ladies and gents in attendance – all 300,000 of them. From June 16 - 20 race-goers will don their most glamorous and elegant outfits and we can't wait to see them.

Ascot is, of course, a very swish affair and this year it has released a new set of its notoriously-strict dress code guidelines. Back in 2012 the fashion police patrolled the racecourse for offendors so if you're heading to the event this year we’ve compiled everything you need to know to steer your outfits in the right direction (and away from trouble.)

LADIES

**1.Dresses and skirts should be of “modest length” **

This is the golden rule of Ascot dressing. "Modest length" is defined just above the knee or longer so channel the Duchess of Cambridge in midi-length dresses or skirts.

**2.Dresses and tops should have straps

**

And they need to be more than inch thick! This means strapless, one shoulder, halter neck and spaghetti straps are out. Tops must also cover midriffs so put away put your crop tops now.

**3. **Trouser suits are welcome

If dresses aren't your thing don't fret! A classic trouser suit is well within the Ascot guidelines. The trousers do need to be full length and both pieces should be of matching material and colour.

4. Jackets and pashminas may be worn

Because, let's be honest, even in June the Great Brittish weather is going to let us down at some point. As long as the dresses and tops underneath still comply with the dress code, wrap yourselves up. We especially love the Queen's hot pink coat she sported last year (see above).

5. Hats are essential

But a headpiece is also acceptable if it has a base of 4 inches (10cm) or more. What's not acceptable this year? Fascinators. The bigger the better we say!

GENTLEMEN

**1.Men are to wear either black or grey morning dress **

This includes a waistcoat and tie (no cravats), a black or grey top hat and black shoes

2. A gentleman may remove his top hat within a restaurant…

…a private box, a private club or that facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. However, customisation of top hats (with, for example, coloured ribbons or bands) is not permitted so no getting creative.

KIDS

Kids are also allowed in on the fun – although only on Friday and Saturday. Girls are suggested to wear cute summer dresses and boys can dress in accordance with the gentlemen’s dress code.
