Who is Beatrix Ost? Who indeed...
She's only the 75-year-old artist and writer who was named muse of Hollywood designer-duo, twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Oslen.
How this glamorous and unique septuagenarian has escaped our attention for so long, we've no idea. But now she has caught it, we're extremely intrigued.
Born in Germany in 1940, Ost grew up during the aftermath of the Second World War.
A talented artist, she went on to paint with Austrian artist Kokoschka, study dance at the Isadora Duncan School, write film scripts – such as Killer Venus, an 'erotic story about betrayal, old love put to the test, and a plan masterminded by a determined woman' – star in movies and plays, and even write books; *My Father's House *was her first memoir, and more recently, she followed it up with a sequel, More Than Everything.
Indeed over her long and varied career she has, at points, considered herself: a film and theatre producer, a designer, an actress, a writer, as well as, an artist.
Her work has been displayed in shows throughout the world, and she was once even artist-in-residence at the New York Academy of Art, the institute founded by Andy Warhol, Stuart Pivar and Dennis Smith (amongst others).
'To paint is to be,' she once said, 'simply to exist, to be in love, to feel I am alive... And to be brave. Like the dragon slayer who takes the sword and with every stroke, the monsters' head multiplies.'
She has been featured in Vogue*, *Harper's Bazaar and *Vanity Fair, *and Bill Cunningham of The New York Times regularly referenced her in his column.
With her sensational style, her beauty and love of turbans, we find her, frankly, mesmerising. As the Olsens twins say: 'She is inimitable.'
