LFW was awash with the mullet hemline this week, from Erdem to Antonio Berardi. You know the one – short at the front, long and trailing at the back; it can be a jacket, dress, skirt or even a sweater. Even Kate Moss was seen taking part, in a silver sequin mullet-hemmed coat at the W Magazine party.

We’ve seen it before in various guises: on the Hollywood red carpet in the form of serious couture, or worn with a grungier vibe in the form of a black chiffon skirt, often teamed with boots and a leather jacket but also the holiday boho vibe – think floral print dresses with a more ruffled, flowing shape.

This new look has a more modern and minimal vibe though. Berardi teamed his with sweatshirts and shirts whilst Preen made theirs less dramatic in drop, it was more of a sloping gradient than mini to maxi.

Of course, you’ll need to wait until SS14 comes out to enjoy these particular looks but there are plenty in stores right now to choose from. The look just requires more of an Autumn/Winter spin. We say adopt the Berardi skirt and sweatshirt combo! Or choose a heavier fabric or item – a graduated hem on a jacket say, or in the form of knitwear. If you can’t go whole-hog, a smart wool skirt that splits at the front gives the same effect and can be teamed with thick black tights, boots and sweater – because let’s face it, the days of chiffon and sandals are already far behind!
