Blogger Sharn started writing Halt Couture in 2011 as a place debate some of the fashion industry's hottest (and most controversial) topics. Whether it's a rant about UGG boots or a passionate post about House of Holland t-shirts, this writer doesn't mince her words, which makes for very enjoyable reading. Find out more with our Q&A...
Grazia Daily: How long have you been blogging?
Since August 2011, but I've been writing all over the place since 2010.
Grazia Daily: What made you decide to start your blog?
I always loved fashion, but wanted to create something alternative to the 'pose-y' blogs out there - something with words to stimulate your mind and not just a collection of pretty pictures. I was studying journalism in London at the time and wanted to start writing regularly so I'd have something to show when I started job hunting. I'm also very opinionated and wanted somewhere to let off a bit of steam!
Grazia Daily: Which subjects do you particularly love blogging about?
Anything controversial. I like writing longer features and weighing in on important topics such as feminism, as well as debating or poking fun at things happening the world of fashion.
Grazia Daily: What’s been your highlight so far?
Just meeting people who actually read my blog and enjoy it! It's a really nice feeling. For me, the blog isn't just a bit of self-indulgence, it's also about the readers enjoying it and relating to what I'm saying.
Grazia Daily: Are there any particular perks of blogging?
There's plenty. You get to go to cool fashion events and can bag yourself a fair few freebies, but I think I'd be lying if I said it turns your life into some magical fashion fantasy! It's still hard work and is not as glamorous as people may think.
Grazia Daily: Do you attend London Fashion Week?
Yes, I've been for the past three seasons. It's always enjoyable and I've been very lucky to go to lots of big shows like Burberry and House of Holland. But it's a very weird atmosphere as everyone's always trying to outdo each other with their outfits! The street style photographers will soon let you know if you're cool or not...
Grazia Daily: What are your favourite brands?
I'm a big fan of ASOS - they've just absolutely nailed online retailing - and I love a bit of H&M. Primark also can't be sniffed at for price. But to satisfy my designer fashion fantasy I always look to Ashish and House of Holland.
Grazia Daily: Blog brag time: why should people read your blog?
Because it's actually different to a lot of blogs out there! I think a lot of people in fashion feel compelled to say everything is amazing, but I'm not afraid to step back and say when something isn't - hence the name Halt! Couture. And I don't fill it with pictures of myself, which I often find really repetitive and boring. Plus it actually has words, lots of them.
Grazia Daily: What advice do you have for anyone starting a blog?
Find a niche. Fashion blogs are ten-a-penny nowadays, so you HAVE to offer something different. The world doesn't need any more model-types blogging about their expensive wardrobe - create something new! And really embrace social media, it's vital for getting people to actually read your blog.
Grazia Daily: Which other fashion blogs do you love?
I quite like Love Aesthetics, even though she's very pose-y, she makes her own stuff, which is really innovative, and keeps things interesting. Other than that I like Fashion Foie Gras, because she's brilliant at keeping her blog up-to-date and doesn't make it all about her.
