What Do Karl, Carine And Bryan Boy Think About Nicholas Ghesquière Leaving Balenciaga?

Like all newsworthy fashion shake-ups, it’s only a matter of time (ahem, seconds) until everybody throws their tuppence in. With last week’s announcement that Nicholas Ghesquière would be departing from Balenciaga after 15 years of incredible trend-making and rule-breaking work, it was no wonder the fashion world was a-buzz with who would replace him, how the fashion house would be affected and where the directional designer would head next.

So which quotes should we take note of? Let’s start with Nicholas himself, who has in past said, "That's the thing in fashion ... because if you do not move, then you are dead." So here he is… moving. Models like Miranda Kerr and Lily Aldridge are already lamenting his departure and worrying over the possibility of his genius disappearing entirely. But that kind of ending seems highly unlikely, so don’t worry girls!

Chief executive officer of PPR, Isabelle Guichot, told WWD that the Balenciaga brand “Is strong enough, developed enough and structured enough to express itself without fear… Now the company is so mature in its organization, in its processes, the business is really moving forward.” And that a successor will be named shortly from a shortlist when they are ready.

Karl Lagerfeld has already stamped his approval on the idea of Nicholas launching his own label. “Perhaps Nicolas wants to have his own label, which is not a bad idea,” Lagerfeld told Reuters. “And it would not be a bad idea if somebody such as Bernard Arnault would invest in a new label because there are so many old labels (within the LVMH group).” Hmm. Have you heard the rumour about Ghesquière going to Chanel…

“I’m not totally surprised—I think he wanted a break, he wanted a change.” Explained Carine Roitfgeld to the Daily Beast, “I’m very sad for the house, he is a genius designer. We love scoop in fashion, no? So I think it’s an amazing scoop I will say.” Bryan Boy maybe has a scoop of his own “I think Alexander Wang has made such a big impact in New York, he is on his way to building his own mega brand. [For those reasons] I don’t know if Wang is perfect for Balenciaga.” Hmm, Mr Wang does appear to be the most whispered about front runner at this time, alongside Christopher Kane, Thomas Tait, Mary Katrantzou, J.W. Anderson, Pedro Lourenco and Nicholas’ assistant Natacha Ramsay. Only half of the promising young talent out there then….
