Karl Lagerfeld, undoubtedly one of the most talented designers in the business – designing multiple lines, photographing seriously cool fashion types (including Choupette for Grazia's Big Fashion Issue cover recently) -and now the German Chanel creative director is dipping his toes into politics!
Ok so maybe that’s a small exaggeration. The white-haired wonder arose bright and early post-American election last Wednesday morning to sketch the re-elected Obama for German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Although he could of course have sketched it in advance, Karl rather surprised us when he told WWD “I couldn’t do it before; I’m superstitious.”
King Karl shows Barack Obama, who he described as “inspiring” in profile, donning crisp chef’s whites and proudly presenting a cake cleverly modelled on The White House. He entitled the sketch – which was drawn in Shu Uemura make-up- The Biggest Chef in the World: 10x5 Stars. Obama joins a long list of seriously A-list icons to be sketched by the Kaiser – from The Queen, The Duchess of Cambridge, Coco Chanel, and of course, his wonderful wife Michelle O!
