That Duchess of Cambridge is a thrifty one, we'll give her that. She's just turned up at her old university, St Andrews, wearing a - shock horror! - old full-length Alice Temperley lace dress. She first debuted the dress back in September 2011 at the War Horse premiere in London. And tonight, she's wearing it just as simply: with a red Alexander McQueen clutch and a patriotic poppy. Kate and Wils are in Scotland for a dinner to celebrate their alma mater's 600th anniversary. As the place they met, it's a place they both have fond memories of. So no wonder they've dressed up for the occasion...

It's not the first time Kate's plucked out an outfit from the back of her wardrobe. Perhaps taking her cue from the ultimate Royal Recycler The Queen, who catalogues each outfit carefully when it's put in storage so she can make sure she's rewearing it in a different way, Kate's become known for her thiftiness. That silk Erdem dress she wore for The Trooping of the Colour? Pilled out again for a friend's wedding a few months later... Ditto, the Joseph dress she made look different on three separate occasions by pairing it with different jackets. Clever Princess!

Alice Temperley custom made this long black lace dress for Kate (which then went on sale for £2,900) so perhaps it's a good job she's able to rewear. But it's also further proof that Temperley London is fast proving to be one of Kate’s favourite frock-makers. You’ll remember the DoC wore a pleated white number by the British designer at Wimbledon earlier this year as well as an embroidered Alice by Alice Temperley shirt with bootcut jeans with a cowboy hat for her trip to Calgary. And cast your mind back to those pre-Royal Wedding days when Kate chose to wear Temperley London for her first official appearance since announcing her engagement.

And Kate isn't the only glossy-haired Middleton who has a penchant for Temperley. Who could forget when little sister Pippa sealed her ‘Royal Hotness’ status with an emerald green Temperley gown for the Royal Wedding evening reception? This was followed by Pippa bagging a ticket to the designer’s Spring / Summer 2012 show during London Fashion Week in September, sitting on the front row alongside Hollywood heavyweight Rosario Dawson.
‘They are brilliant girls — good Brit stock,’ Alice Temperley has previously said of the Middleton sisters. ‘It’s refreshing, because there’s this whole world of celebrities, but they are so well mannered and polite. They are true British girls, and they are very good ambassadors for British fashion and what we represent.’ Well, the proof is in the pudding. And in how well she wears that dress. Again.
