Last week we hosted a ‘Street Style, Trend Spotting and Photography’ masterclass in the Apple Store, Regent Street as part of our School of Grazia series where we give you access to fashion industry experts, from bloggers to designers. Grazia’s Editor-At-Large Angela Buttolph led the Q&A with Grazia’s own Style Hunter Hannah Almassi alongside photographer Phill Taylor who has shot for the likes of Grazia and Miss Selfridge, and fashion bloggers Sandra of 5 Inch and Up and Peony Lim.
They discussed everything from what to look for in potential street style subjects to how to spot the latest trends, as well as what equipment you'll need to create beautiful fashion photos. As Sandra and Peony both do personal style posts, Angela also quizzed them on their tips for posing in front of the camera and promoting their blogs.
Here are the top 5 things we learnt - you can also watch the masterclass in full by clicking on the link below...
1. Style is not just about wearing the latest trends
Grazia's Hannah revealed: 'I look for distinctive style when I am trying to find people to shoot, rather than those just copying the catwalk trends. It's more exciting to find trends which are born on the street rather than the runway.'
2. It helps if you know the person taking your photos
Sandra explained: 'It helps if your know your photographer well, as it means you'll let go and relax more easily.'
Peony agreed: 'It's convenient my boyfirned wanted to be a photographer as I feel so comfortable with him.'
3. Think about when and where you shoot
Peony said: 'I'm really jealous of bloggers who live in LA as the lighting is so good. It makes a huge difference to your photos. I shoot my posts all in one day - the day of the week with the best weather!'
Phill explained that using your local area to your advantage is key. 'People all over the world look at London street style pictures and they want to see a see a London girl with the city as her backdrop. It's all about the story.'
4. Steet style photography has influenced all areas of the fashion industry
Hannah said: 'So many fashion brands shoot in a street style way now. That's how it has influenced and evolved our view of fashion.'
Phill has even shot fashion campaigns on an iPhone! He advised: 'Make the most of your iPhone, using apps like Hipstamatic, which leave the photos more grainy so you are less likely to notice the quality not being as good.'
5. Promote yourself and your blog
Sandra said she uses Chictiopia and Look Book: 'They are a great way of putting your style out there and finding people who like similar brands and styles to you. You should join twitter and follow people like you too. Mingle online.'
Peony urged fellow bloggers to 'Say yes to things. Everything helps to build up your brand. Equally blogs offer free publicity to brands and I've seen bloggers sell out and post about anything they're sent. Don't be bossed around!'
