RUMOUR: Will Erdem Moralioğlu Be The New Schiaparelli Designer?

Well, well, well. Isn’t this a day of exciting high fashion rumours! Just when the Hedi Slimane/Raf Simons shenaningans settled down at Yves Saint Laurent and Dior, along comes the news that Nicholas Ghesquiere is (SHOCK!) leaving Balenciaga after an ultra-successful 15 years and now: a rumour that London Fashion Week’s global star Erdem will be taking up the key spot at re-launched Parisian icon, Schiaparelli.
For yonks fashion whispers around the industry have been that the avant-garde but disgraced designer John Galliano would reignite his career by stepping up to the legendary mantle of Italian-via-Paris surrealist and fashion rebel, Elsa Schiaparelli. We must stress: this is not official. BUT, back in September when the Grazia fashion team had the exciting opportunity to visit Schiap’s famous Place Vendome apartment and studio in the heart of Paree, we were informed that the official announcement would come in November. And, well, it IS November…

So let’s think about why Erdem would be the right man to bring this brand back to life. In spite of the fact that Elsa was keen to democratise many fashion items and bring accessible fashion house perfumes to the fore, the new Schiaparelli will be focused on couture. And who better to design couture dresses than a master of the frock like Canadian-born British-Turkish Erdem Moralioğlu. His intricate lace pieces, heavenly prints and red carpet-worthy evening gowns have notched up a high profile list of celebrity fans – all the way from Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton to Miranda Kerr, Emma Watson and Keira Knightley. Sounds like a dreamy idea to us.
