US Vogue's Grace Coddington Sketches Cats, Anna Wintour And Prada For Her Memoir

29 October 2012 by

It’s hard to believe that The September Issue was released three years ago. We feel like we’ve loved Grace Coddington all our lives, and yet, as longtime admirers of her creative work and modelling, it was only via this fabulous fash documentary that we fell for the Creative Director’s personality: her romantic view on the fashion industry, her conviction, her disappointments and her totally and utterly adorable soft side. She was the success story of that film and because of such, GC has been increasingly watched on the FROW; we’ve seen her casually styling it out in those Prada creepers before anyone else, enjoyed the many editorial shoots inspired by the two figureheads of US Vogue, been mesmerised by her bobbing flame do, and interested by the fact that she’s a top illustrator, too.

This arty streak first came to our attention with her kitty cat doodles for a range of Balenciaga handbags and scarves. As a noted cat lover, this was a puuurrfect way for Grace to enter the world of illustration, and so Balenciaga's Nicholas Ghesquiere let Grace run wild, inspired by her own pussycat, Pumpkin. But now there’s more sketches from the fashion artiste! Her self-penned memoir, Grace, which will hit stores in November, is chock-full of Coddington’s cute and cheeky illustrations. Naturally, felines are present, but so are many of the industry characters, fashion brands and moments that have shaped Grace’s fabulous life in style. Cue Andre Leon Talley and Anna Wintour in matchy matchy Chanel jackets, Grace workin' her favourite Yves Saint Laurent Coat and sweet self-deprecating moments, like a jubilant Grace succesfully sending her first ever email.
