Downton Abbey's Costume Designer Caroline McCall On The Costumes In Series Three: VIDEO EXCLUSIVE

If Sunday night means a roast dinner, a glass of wine and tuning in to Downton Abbey (swiftly followed by Homelands on 4oD) then you'll be devastated to hear that next week's episode is the last in the series. Luckily for us Downton addicts the third series will be out on DVD and Blu-ray on November 5th so there’s not long to wait until we can relive all the highs and lows - from Lady Mary's emotional wedding to Lady Sybil's shock death - over and OVER again.

Considering our dedication to the show it will come as no surprise that we jumped at the chance to feature an exclusive clip of Downton's costume designer Caroline McCall talking about the process of designing the outfits worn by Lady Mary, Lady Edith and Lady Sybil in the series. Caroline reveals that moving the show forward into the 1920s was a very exciting process as it was such an extraordinary time for fashion. The ladies of the house would all have experienced tremendous changes in their wardrobes with hemlines rising and garments becoming more draped and less constricting - it truly was a beautiful and liberating period for women's style.

And of course the key role in any costume designer's job is ensuring the clothes that the actors wear not only fit the period, but are also authentic for the character. Caroline explains that her decision to design a soft and feminine wedding dress for Lady Mary for her highly anticipated marriage to Cousin Matthew was made in order to ensure a sharp intake of breath as fans and crew members alike revelled in such a tough character appearing so demure and delicate. It certainly got our attention.
